I cannot praise this book highly enough. The text is written in such a way that is is very easy for the total amateur - i.e. me - to learn a lot about the beautiful butterflies and "macro" moths in Northern Ireland. In addition to a wealth of information about which moths and butterflies have been recorded; when and where they were recorded, there is a great deal of practical advice on studying butterflies and moths in the field. The photographs are stunning.

In short - a truly beautiful and very useful book. The only drawback, is that the book is very heavy. Not easy to hold on one's knee for long periods.

What a book!! I have gone throught it over and over again since buying it. Stunning photography, by Robert, information and distribution maps. If you are in to butterflies and moths this book should be on your book shelf. Buy it now before it goes out of print!

Look out for Roberts photography in his new book THE WILD ORCHIDS OF IRELAND An Identification Guide

An ideal reference and very highly recommended instruction guide 8 Oct. 2007
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The collaborative work of natural history expert Robert Thompson and entomologist Brian Nelson, "The Butterflies And Moths Of Northern Ireland" is a 440-page compendium of information that provides the reader with a complete and comprehensive description of all of the butterflies and moths that are to be found in the northern provinces of Ireland. Profusely and beautifully illustrated, "The Butterflies And Moths Of Northern Ireland" identifies the various species, describes their habitats, their distribution, their status, their flight periods, and even recommends the best way to study them in the field. Enhanced with conservation information, a thoroughly 'reader friendly' text, and an historical survey of naturalists who have built up our knowledge base of the Lepidoptera of Northern Ireland, "The Butterflies And Moths Of Northern Ireland" is an ideal reference and very highly recommended instruction guide for students and academia, as well as non-specialist general readers with an interest in butterflies and moths.
