Product Description

Review

The global interactive perspective of this book creates continuing opportunities to visualize the industry actions and reactions, and helps me in the process of advising our clients. --Philippe Croce-Spinelli, Vignobles Croce-Spinelli, Consultant to the French wine industry, Les Arcs, Provence, France

A brilliant book that has provided real inspiration and it has guided us in the process of defining our strategy and positioning our company. --Francisco Robles, Production Manager, Clos de la Tierra Sana, Mendoza, Argentina

I believe this book is invaluable and the authors' analysis of global patterns extremely informative and quite useful. As a winemaker, I found that reading this book helped me to understand exactly how the global issues of the industry will affect all wineries including the largest and smallest wineries. I very much enjoyed the detailed historical narratives and learning more about the industry from a global perspective. --Gary Zucca, Ph.D., Zucca Mountain Vineyards, Stocton, California, USA

Product Description

The enjoyable nectar of grapes and the business of bringing it to consumers have already had a long history, but never before has the wine industry seen so much change. The Business of Wine is aimed at anyone with an interest in broadening his or her view of wine to encompass some of the fascinating complexities of the business side of this international industry. It is also the intention that it provides substantive reading for the professional, the academic, or the student seeking to gain deeper insight into the structure and economics of the industry as well as into the various trends and pressures which are currently affecting it. Go to any bookstore, and you will find a myriad of guides to the wines of the world. Interesting as such books are to wine lovers, these volumes leave many gaps. The aim of this book is to fill those gaps and to provide a global overview of wine as a business. While it is still possible to drive through Provence, Napa Valley or Mendoza unearthing the odd case of undiscovered nectar, the real backbone of today's wine industry lies elsewhere. It is that backbone - its structure and complex functions - that is examined in detail in The Business of Wine.

Format:Paperback
This book is an informative text, with lots of information and statistics on the global wine business, markets and trends which would be useful to a student (for example at WSET Diploma or wine MBA level). However, the book is littered with typographical errors which detract from what is generally speaking a well-researched academic study. Some of the errors are as basic as the repeated mis-spelling of a company or brand name. It also contains many graphs and tables with no units of measurement or explanations, and some of the analysis is based on sweeping generalisations (e.g. that French women tend to add water to their wine - I have never met a French woman who does so!). Much of the data is also now out of date, but this is hard to avoid with a printed publication.

If you have a good level of attention to detail and find typos annoying, I would recommend that you don't try to read this book cover-to-cover. However, as a reference text, to provide a general overview of different processes or an alternative viewpoint on a particular issue, it is useful.
