Product Description

The software industry is in a fast-paced league of its own. The drive to have the highest level of speed, the highest level of flexibility in strategic planning, and the need to manage talent of a different generation and mindset, make it truly unique. Few possess as much experience showing software professionals how to succeed as Michael Cusumano, who has served as a board member or consultant to such organizations as AT&T, AOL, CompuServe, Lucent and Verizon. THE SOFTWARE BUSINESS packs his invaluable insight into a single, powerful guide. Just as he did in MICROSOFT SECRETS, Cusumano links issues of strategy and organization with those of managing technology. He argues that the key to success in the 600 billion USD software business is choosing a business model that will capitalize on the good times and survive the bad. Through eye-opening case studies, Cusumano introduces a ground breaking framework that any manager can use to select the right business model from a choice of three: products, services, or hybrid business solutions. A must-read for every manager, programmer, analyst, entrepreneur, and student interested in software, THE SOFTWARE BUSINESS is destined to become a handbook for getting ahead in the competitive field of computers and e-commerce.

Even after the dot-com boom and bust, software remains the business world's glamour industry. In this insightful study, professor and industry expert Michael A. Cusumano skips the glitz and goes straight for the nuts and bolts. The result is a clear rendering of exactly what makes one software firm hit it big while dozens of others go broke. Despite a slight, occasional tendency to sound academic, Cusumano really explains why a well-run software company can be a gold mine. He carefully covers the best practices in the software development industry in depth and offers plenty of real-world case histories to add juice to what could have been a dry recitation. He even explains why you have to hold on so long when you call a mass-market software firm's toll-free number. We recommend this detailed book to software pros seeking insight into their industry, as well as to investors and to those who like inside stories about entrepreneurial adventures.

The software business is unlike any other business. To start a manufacturing business, significant capital is needed to finance inventory, equipment, factory, and so on. What does one need to start a software company? A COMPUTER and some other miscellaneous items are needed, and that's it. And once a software program is written, how much does it cost to product a million copies? It cost very little. No wonder Microsoft is so profitable. This book is great for entrepreneurs interested in starting up a software company and for investors who are looking to invest in any software company. In my view, it is better to spend $20 to $30 on a book that can save someone thousands or even millions of dollars in mistakes.

Having bashed out code for some 10 years, I enjoyed this book with many if the observations ringing true. The author has 'been there, done that' with a clear assessment of companies he's been associated with that have both flown or flopped. I appreciated his observations that in the context of its market, Microsoft's development practices make sense, while allowing that six-sigma/ISO9001 is fine for other folks.

The message to take away is that big wealth comes from hitting the revenue J-curve with a shrink-wrapped software package than can ship for a £1 but be charged at full retail. However, not many of us are so blessed, and the reality is that most companies need to plug away on combined product/service offering where the scalability and margins are never going to achieve that of a 'killer-app' that flies off the shelves. But one can dream!
