An explosive new thriller from the bestselling Faye Kellerman featuring LA detective Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus.

A plane crashes in unexplained circumstances and the mystery deepens when police investigate. The owners know nothing of the four bodies found in the wreckage. Who are these unidentified passengers? But the biggest question of all comes from a husband frantic with worry. His wife was supposed to be on the plane – but never boarded it. So why is she still missing? From the Inside Flap

The Return of Peter Decker & Rina Lazarus.

At 8.15am, a commuter plane carrying forty-seven passengers crashes into a building in Los Angeles. The LAPD's first priority is to allay fears that this is another terrorist outrage. Their second is to explain the bizarre mystery they discover in the debris.

An extra, unidentified, body has been found in the wreckage - but there is no trace of another woman who was supposedly on the flight.

To answer the riddle, Lieutenant Peter Decker and his team will have to dig back through three decades of tragic history to uncover the evil behind these crimes ... and what they find challenges their most basic assumptions about truth, guilt and justice. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely to meet the family again! 28 May 2008
By E. Heckingbottom TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Although not one of the best thrillers that Faye Kellerman has written, this was, nonetheless an enjoyable read. After a break of about two years (her last book was more historical) it was lovely to be involved in the Rina/Pete Decker extended family - including his Police colleagues. Mind you, time has passed! Hannah is no longer the sweet little girl that she was - she ha grown to be one of those dreaded creatures ... a teenager!

The story was gripping too. A terrifying plane crash over L.A. - followed by a missing body results in a deep mystery - especially once a body totally unrelated to the case turns up!
Problem 1 - whose is the body?
Problem 2 - who murdered her?
Problem 3 - where is the stewardess? Is she dead, and if so, who murdered her?

Pete travels all over the area, clocking up the airmiles and spending many sleepless nights; ending up with an intriguing and unexpected solution.

If you are at a loose end and are looking for a light, enjoyable read; give it a go. It's a good, light read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book that could be written by her husband 31 July 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Faye Kellerman is the wife of the author Jonathan Kellerman, and while they both write detective fiction, their writing styles are typically very different. His books tend to rattle along at a certain rate, while her books are typically more thought provoking. Both styles are valid, but I find her books more enjoyable when they're written well.

In this book, a plane crashes into an appartment block in Los Angeles. The actual crash is dealt with quickly, because the aftermath is at the heart of the book.

While looking for evidence of the last remaining passenger from the crash (a passenger they never find), they come across a badly burned body. Naturally they assume their work is done. When this assumption turns out to be false, Pete Decker decides he has two murders on his hands, one recent (the passenger), and one over 30 years old.

After some decent detective work, they nail both killers, and that element of the story is told well. The problem is that the book focuses a little too much of the mystery aspect of the story. The best Faye Kellerman stories make me think (or tell me something about Judaism, if nothing else), and that doesn't happen here, which left me wanting more from the book, and that's a shame.

By Donald Mitchell HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This book will delight those who like mysteries that are very difficult to solve before the author reveals the story's resolution.

If you mainly read the Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus books to focus on their life together, you'll think this is one of the worst books in the series. If you like puzzles, however, you'll feel fully rewarded by the challenging of determining what happened to flight attendant, Roseanne Dresden. Along the way, you'll pick up some unexpected twists that also make for good mystery reading.

This plot relies on a lot of coincidences. That can be troubling for a reader to swallow, but in real life coincidence occurs so often that we often don't even bother to remark on it. There is a subgenre of police procedural that relies on having more than one case mixed up in an investigation. I thought that the premise for this mystery was stronger than most books in that subgenre. But what distinguished the book was that the resolutions proved to be so difficult to anticipate. I dislike mysteries where you can see the solution beginning to take shape around page 50. In this case, Ms. Kellerman did an excellent job of keeping the resolution hidden until very near the end.

From reading this book, I hope that Ms. Kellerman will write more books that contain difficult puzzles whose solutions only gradually reveal themselves through police investigations.

Bravo, Ms. Kellerman!

4.0 out of 5 stars Faye Kellerman gets sharp again 22 May 2009
Format:Paperback
There was a time when a lot of Faye Kellerman's books were taken up with details about Decker's family. Nice to know he had a happy home l ife, but for those of us with a thirst for her mystery writing ability, the use of valuable clue and plot space in this way became frustrating. But with this book she is back on track, the kids get a mention, Rina makes some great food but only in the background, and the mystery is tip top. A great attention to detail, lots of action and a clever intertwining of plots. Welcome back to the top FK!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars good mystery, weak ending 4 Oct 2008
Format:Paperback
The pace of this book is quite slow, but it went well with the developments of the plot. I found that after the lengthy build up, the actual resolution of the two mysteries was done and dusted very quickly, with a lot of detail simply not there, and I found that a bit unsatisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good mystery 13 Aug 2008
By JM TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is the first book I have written by this author and on the whole I enjoyed it and would probably read another of hers. It was very easy to read, I would say it is a good mystery rather than a thriller, as it's not dramatic or frightening, it is simply about how the police solve the decades old murder of one woman and the recent disappearance of another, but it IS a good mystery with lots of interesting twists and turns along the way. Interesting and enjoyable, if slightly drawn out, I did feel there was quite a bit of stuff in there that had no relevance to the story, but if you enjoy a good mystery then it's well worth a read.
