I feel that I urgently need to let people know how good this book is.
I can't remember how long is it since I read a book that satisfies on so many levels. It is immensely clever (in a good way), brilliantly planned and meticulously detailed. But more than anything else it is a rip-roaring good read. So absorbing in fact that I wound up being late for work more than once because I could not put it down over breakfast!
The craft in the storytelling - letting the different threads unravel with just the right pace, cadence and cross-interference - is simply wonderful; in fact amazing for a first novel. Likewise the richness and density of the content suggests that the author might have spent years in research and preparation. Maybe he has just spent more time gambling, reading and having sex than most people. Whatever, there is an energy and sensuousness running through the entire narrative that ranges from exhilarating to oppressive - it's hard not to feel baked dry by the glaring Arizona sun - and it just carries you along with it like a tidal wave.
And then comes the best achievement: this book has something very important to say. It is about the way we view ourselves, our expectations of our lives, the way we choose to live them, and the consequences it brings. Legendre delivers this message beautifully: not preachy nor sensational, but passionately and grounded in a logic that makes it utterly convincing. And entertaining too.
So read this book. You may not have heard of the author before (I hadn't before I picked it up), but don't let that put you off. Try something different and be astonished and gratified by the change!
