Set on a world that a millenium ago was shattered into a thousand pieces and is only held together by great spells, this book continues the tale of The Shattered World. Lady Trisandela, one of the evil Cthons, seeks to resurrect a long-dead leader, Yasothoth, in order to overthrow the current leader and gain control of the whole of the shattered world, not just the Cthons' fragment of Xoth. The great sorcerer, Pandrogas and his lady Amber are the only ones who can stop this from happening, but Pandrogas is outwitted by Yasothoth and placed under a geas to do his will. This leaves only Amber to save the world.
I enjoyed this book. Although it is not great literature, the story moves along at a good pace ensuring that one is keen to know what happens next. The main characters are reasonably well developed and the visualisation of the shattered world is sufficiently well done to maintain one's suspension of disbelief. The book ends in such a way as to suggest a third volume, but I have never yet seen one...
