Buddy Holly laid the foundations for a generation of popular music with his ground-breaking combination of Country Music and Rhythm & Blues. This film tells his story from it's explosive beginning to it's tragic end with Gary Busey giving and electrifying, Oscar Nominated performance as the genius from Lubbock, Texas, who changed the tune of Rock N Roll. The Buddy Story is one of the best biopics ever produced, featuring 12 of his greatest hit songs as well as winning the 1978 Academy Award for the Best Adaptation Score. It's a dynamic tribute to one of the most influential Rock N Rollers of all time and his legacy.

Having seen the great man on stage in 1958, and the stage show in London in the late 1990's it seemed natural to have the DVD of his short and productive life. I have seen the film on TV previously so obviously knew what to expect, but for a lifelong fan, along with many others such as Paul McCartney, Keith Richard etc. it is a film that I can watch time after time without becoming bored. His music is still played today and stands the test of time alongside other greats, and one wonders how far he would have progressed if only the fateful day in 1959 had not occurred. One of the all time heroes of rock and roll, and ballads, who will never be surpassed. Gary Busey obviously doesn't quite match up to the voice of the original Buddy but the film is still very enjoyable and includes some funny moments and some extremely poignant ones. For fans such as me, the ending still invokes a lump in the throat, as we all remember where we were when the news came that he had died in a plane crash. Obviously, I was still at school, and that same feeling was experienced by Graham Nash, as he reminisced in the TV programme on Buddy's life on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of his death in 1959.
Buy it and enjoy it.

This is a brilliant digital version of the 1978 film, sound quality is brilliant. The TITLE on this website is a bit ambiguous because the original was in 1978, this DVD is the 50th anniversary of Holly's death so in fact should have the date 2009 at the end of the title - catalogue programmers please note....

I am a massive Buddy Holly fan since I was a kid and my parents took me to see the west end show. This film includes all the decisions and influences Buddy had on music and perfectly shows how much of a genuis success he was in such a short space of time - all wrapped up with great acting!
