I don't normally write reviews but feel this book (alongside the buddha at bedtime book) deserve some recognition.. I am not a buddhist but the stories in this book are meaningful for everyone - adult and child alike. I am currently reading these stories every night with my 7 year old daughter.. And she is the perfect age to appreciate the stories (and hopefully some of the messages are seeping in there as well).. The stories are a good 'nighttime story' length and are accompanied with bright, lovely pictures. Overall this is a great book to read with your child (I would say from 6-10 age group) and because of how beautiful the book looks, it would also make a lovely gift.

Typical Buddhist stuff that thinks buddhism is all about being guided by the Buddha! Except in this case you are rather patronisingly guided by someone else. The buddha was guided- but also was highly rebellious to social norms, expectations and his teachers. It has that really preachy feel that just gets me- being perfect leads to a defense mechanism called reaction formation- staying in control of one's feelings and instincts in order to maintain a self image of being right. Reaction formation is feeling one thing and then expressing the opposite or at least something unrelated, such as feeling resentful but acting nice, feeling a need to rest but working harder. This seems to set up kids in this formation before they have even formed! As you can see I found it rather annoying!

My son loves to read this book, as it has short stories with amazing moral messages. Afterwards there is an explanation of the morals behind the story, all children should read this book. great
