Book Description

7 July 2005

Ed is having a hard time - at work, in his love life and, well, generally. Then he meets an unlikely Buddhist - who drinks and smokes and talks his kind of language. Bit by bit, things begin to change...

Ed doesn't always take Geoff's advice. Or, when he does he lapses at the crucial moment. His path to understanding is not a straight one, especially as life keeps throwing more and more 'stuff' at him. Often he fails - like most of us, in fact. But sometimes he manages to get it right. And when he does, surprising things begin to happen ...

In The Buddha, Geoff and Me Edward Canfor-Dumas brings all his skills to bear in an absorbing story of everyday city life, where the characters stand out with all their human strengths and weaknesses, and the ending brings Ed - and perhaps all of us? - a hope we didn't necessarily expect.

The Buddha, Geoff and Me - for anyone who's ever begun to wonder what the whole damn thing is all about ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Balm for modern day living 1 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Loved it! This is a great book for anyone who has up until this point been interested in the philosophy of Buddhism but has found it too unwieldy and unapproachable. The novelised form of this book completely demystifyies it. Not only does it make the theory easier to comprehend, but it is completely engaging and compelling. It cannot help but resonate deeply on some level with anyone. (And if they say that it doesn't -they're lying!!!) It really is a balm for modern day living. I can't recommend it heartily enough, and will be buying it for all my friends for xmas!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern story which resonates 1 Aug 2005
Format:Paperback
'Karma' is a word I'd often heard but never really understood the meaning of. Similarly 'Chi'. I was curious about Buddhism, but find organised religion a turn-off. This light-hearted story is a clever way of showing how Buddhist principles can be applied to our modern and increasingly stressful world. Amusing real-life vignettes are used to illustrate how a Buddhist approach might help in dealing with situations in which we all find ourselves; the 'blocked toilet incident' had me in stitches.
Like the book's main protaganist, Ed, I occasionally had doubts about where the story was going. However I kept finding real resonances with events in my life and thinking how Geoff, his mentor, might have handled things differently. Whilst I probably won't remember that an anchor in your life is called a 'honzon' or the names of the 'ten worlds', the principles described made a whole lot of sense. I've since found myself applying 'Geoff' to forthcoming work issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brain food 3 May 2006
Format:Paperback
I found this browsing in the library - with an interest in Buddhism without always understanding the finer points I hoped it would be a good read. Once I had read the first three or four chapters I realised that once I returned it to the library I would have to buy my own copy, so I could read it more slowly and look at how I can apply it in my own life. If you want great literature you might not like it - it deals with everyday problems in everyday language and the plot is engaging rather than riveting. But if you want to learn something about yourself then read this book and re-examine how honest you really are about who you are, what you do and why you behave that way. Thank you, Edward Canfor-Dumas, for opening my eyes - now it's up to me.
