Book Description

'But if a rose can bloom in the snow, be trodden on and ripped apart. Grow from the ashes of burning debris, and still find the strength to carry on, and be more beautiful than before, surely we can too.' Annabella has experience with bullying and depression, first love and meeting her idols at the Harry Potter World Premiere. But nothing could prepare her for the devastating events that would change the course of her life forever. The Broken tells the true story of a young woman's journey, through her grandmother's battle with cancer, her broken family and dealing with the hospital neglect scandal. She must now learn to rebuild her life, and finally find the happiness she longs for. An inspirational story of courage and family love. Moving forward and above all never losing hope.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Broken isn't so broken after all. 24 Nov 2013
The Broken is a novel centred around Annabelle and is written in a mainly autobiographical way. It follows the life of Annabelle, from early childhood, up to 21 and looks at various events within her life. The book focuses on Annabelle's depression, cancer, the quality of the NHS and her own family breaking apart. The book is written using first person narration.

I've read over twenty books so far this year and this book was the most emotional book among them. It's well written, with characters that are well constructed and easy to picture and understand. The book flows well and kept me constantly page turning. I finished the book in a day as it was fascinating to see her life and how she coped with what can only be described as quite traumatizing events. The theme of the book is hope and it stands out clear, with a strong emphasis on the importance of family and friends. From the outset the book looks depressing and sad, yet this image couldn't be further from the truth. The writer develops Annabelle into a character who sees the good in all situations and overcomes impossible barriers in her life. I would easily recommend this book.

No book is perfect and there are a couple of small things I wish could have been changed. I wish the writer had spent more time writing about Annabelle's childhood as we see a great deal of her as a teenager and beyond but relatively little as a child. Towards the end of the book the description of scenes almost doubles to the rest of the book, overloading the pages. The book is nicely ended but it could have been shorter. I am literally talking the last seven pages, with the other 203 with near perfect description of scenes and feelings.

4.0 out of 5 stars A painful journey 9 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Siobhan has written a very moving account of her life experiences so far. She is articulate and I feel her writing is her way out of her depression. She is very young to have had so many negative experiences but her bravery shines through. She will be ok. I hope life brings her love and laughter and she can roll with the punches. Your grandma is never far away Siobhan and I believe would be oh so proud of you and your family. God bless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply reality. 25 Nov 2013
By Amyxo
Inspirational, heart breaking and deeply moving. After reading and re-reading 'The Broken' I want to cry, laugh, climb Mount Everest... The novel has so many emotions that relate to myself and most definitely others in the world. I admire the strength in the struggle to overcome the tragedies that occur in Annabella's life, and the way in which the book is written involves the reader in every aspect of Annabella's life... almost as if you are Annabella yourself.

Fabulous work and such a good read! Recommended for all.
