Ask not for whom the wedding bells toll…

The Markhat Files, Book 6

There’s no way Markhat can turn away his newest client. Who is he to refuse the woman he loves—especially when she bribes him with breakfast?

This time it’s Darla’s friend Tamar Fields, whose fiancé vanished days before the wedding. His wealthy family insists Carris Lethway is simply away on urgent business. Tamar smells a lie, and she needs Rannit’s most famous finder to figure out if the source of the suspicious aroma is a conspiracy, or the groom’s cold, sweaty feet.

As if his plate isn’t piled high enough, Mama Hog’s slip of the tongue has landed him in the middle of a good old-fashioned Pot Lockery clan feud. Plus, Rannit’s streets are abuzz with rumors of war—and Tamar’s case has his own lady love hearing wedding bells of her own.

As Rannit arms for battle, Markhat finds himself torn between old alliances and new commitments, and a growing, awful fear that no matter which way he turns, all he loves is about to go up in flames.

Warning: This work of fiction is known to contain dangerous vowels and at least two instances of provocative folk dancing. Readers should be prepared to produce fresh emus for inspection at any time while reading pages 78 or 134. Neither the Publisher nor the Author condones the formation of covalent hydrogen bonds, although the Author does wink at them when his attorney isn't looking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 31 Dec 2011

My wife and I simultaneously read this book while on vacation and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

Tuttle creates an interesting fantasy world and a well-paced, intricate, captivating plot. He takes stock fantasy beings and gives them a twist. His world is not stagnant, as real world technology is pushing up against the magical elements.

The reference to Pratchett in another review is apt, if you compare it to the Commander Vimes books. Tuttle uses first person narrative, Markhat is more akin to an investigator as opposed to Vimes' command of a larger organization, and the Tuttle characters have more depth without the British/Python-esque antics.

This book is best enjoyed with a knowledge of the series preceding it. I strongly recommend reading through all the Markhat books (as well of Tuttle's other works).

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! (To no one's surprise.) 29 Dec 2011

If "Fantasy-noir" is considered as a distinct genre, then Frank Tuttle might just be its reigning monarch.

Markhat's latest exploits have all the adventure and humor I've come to expect; brisk, lively, and intricate plotting, seasoned with delightfully funny moments that make me laugh out loud. Think Douglas Adams meets Dashiell Hammett, filtered through a lens of Terry Pratchett.

Markhat and the rest of the cast are continuing to develop -- some old friends show more nuance, and some characters that had been only lightly delineated gain some interesting depth. Two of the regulars were away for a good deal of the novel -- I always enjoy Evis and Mama Hog, and both were traveling -- but both make their voices heard, all the same.

If you've read previous Markhat novels, don't wait -- buy this immediately. If you haven't read any ... what are you waiting for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Ten Star Book!!!! 28 Dec 2011

You know those rare books, where you will be happily reading and some dolt will come along and interrupt you with things like, "nice weather we are having" or "the building is on fire and you best vacate" and you actually feel yourself transforming into some small lethal mammal with claws and fangs and horns and you look up and give them that glare, that "CAN'T YOU SEE I'M READING" glare and hope that they will vanish into a cloud of fog or drop through a trap door or whatever will allow you to return happily to your book? Well I am 23% through and this is one of those books.

Okay, I finished it and it completely lived up to my expectations. If I was Bill Gates I would keep Frank Tuttle in a cage, throw him the occasional steak and just make him write nonstop. He has a knack for not messing up the ending. I hate it when you invest in all of those chapters and the ending is lousy or predictable or weird. He always brings it home. But DO NOT START THE SERIES WITH THIS ONE. You don't have to read all five others, but definitely begin with "Hold The Dark" or you will miss so much of the story developing. He doesn't feel he has to return everyone to their pre-book state after each story. Great stuff!
