This is essentially an economic and industrial relations analysis of the post-war British motor industry, although it concentrates almost entirely on BMC/BL and its predecessor firms. Rootes/Chrysler, Ford & Vauxhall are detailed to a much lesser extent; smaller companies which also suffered from industrial relations problems and decline such as De Lorean, Lotus and Reliant are ignored entirely. Even the Rolls Royce collapse is missed out.
As a scholarly work, the referencing and justification for all points made are thorough and comprehensive, but there are a number of errors in terms of model details which jar when read from an enthusiast's point of view.
Whisler does not come across as a 'car guy' and the book does not give a substantial treatment of public opinion and attitudes towards the British motor industry, which have clearly been a major part of the decline (witness the current MG Rover debâcle).
I would not say the book is the definitive study of the British motor industry for which we have all been waiting, but as an academic work, it has its merits.
