Book Description

The scope of Britain's wartime Middle East Command stretched far beyond the Libyan desert where the 8th Army's most famous battles were fought - from Gibraltar and Tunisia in the west, to Iraq and Persia in the east, and from Greece south to the Gulf of Aden. In 1940-43 this was the only arena where the British Army could take the ground war to the German Wehrmacht; it saw a succession of setbacks and triumphs, until spring 1945 found the 8th Army victorious in northern Italy. A summary of these campaigns is illustrated by photographs, and detailed colour plates of the wide range of uniforms worn in the varied conditions of this huge theatre of war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Men-at-Arms Series Great Reference Tool For Uniforms 1 Jun. 2013
By Linda Cargill - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I found this book an indispensable reference tool in completing my research on World War 2. I was focusing on the El Alamein Campaign in North Africa in 1942, especially what could be called the "First Alamein"when General Auchinlek "The Auk" was still in charge. I imagined what a British soldier going off to that theater for the first time would look like. I pictured him with full-length, tan slacks and a long-sleeved tan jacket, the Khaki Drill Service Dress. On his back he carried a sleeping bag. He shouldered a supply bag. He would strap a wide leather belt around his waist. His sun helmet, a broad-brimmed tan hat, would have a top hat-like effect. His gun, a Lee-Enfield service rifle slightly modified, would be called an SMLE, a Short Magazine Lee-Enfield. It all seemed very vivid. The middle section of the book is full of color illustrations, and that was the most valuable section for me.
