Book Description

25 Aug 2010
For more than forty years, the mantra of the eight women in the Bridge Club has been "one for all and all for one." Beginning their monthly soiree in the psychedelic Sixties, unpredicted twists of fate weave through the good times and strong friendship they share as the years pass. The constant from one decade to the next is loyal and nonjudgmental support, even when agreeing to disagree is the final solution. From the exhilarating cultural changes of their early times together through the "zoomer" years, their connection never falters.

As they celebrate turning sixty (give or take a year) at a group birthday weekend, each woman recalls a challenging time in her life when the Bridge Club came to the rescue. After tossing around ideas mixed with a generous helping of common sense and a large dose of laughter they decide to refer to that time as their "SOS". Eight chapters document each one's story.

Everything is put into perspective and the strength of their friendship is truly tested when one of these women faces a life-altering decision. Her choice profoundly affects all members of the group, pushing the limits of their beliefs and values. The unique alliance they share is confronted with a crisis none of them might have imagined.

More About the Author

Patricia Sands lives in Toronto, Canada, when she isn't somewhere else. An admitted travel fanatic, she can pack a bag in a flash and be ready to go anywhere ... particularly the south of France.

Her award-winning debut novel The Bridge Club was published in 2010 and her second novel, The Promise of Provence was an Amazon Hot New Release in April 2013, a USA Best Book 2013 Finalist and a 2013 Finalist in Literary Fiction, National Indie Excellence Awards. A new release is scheduled for Summer 2014.

Celebrating the rewarding friendships and bonds women share, her stories examine the challenges life often throws in our paths. Location features prominently in all of her novels.

The Love In Provence series ~ The Promise of Provence (2013); Promises To Keep (Summer 2014) ~ allows readers to lose themselves in the beauty of the south of France without leaving home.

Frequently invited to speak with women's groups on the subjects of writing and self-publishing, topics also cover the importance of valuing our personal stories and seeing ageing as opportunity. At other events along with her Sommers & Sands speaking partner, author Susan Sommers, through keynotes, workshops and conferences, audiences are encouraged to embrace change and see challenges as opportunities.

Her philosophy is that it's never too late to begin something new, to seize each day and be a possibilitarian! As the saying goes, just do it! Hearing from readers (both men and women, from ages 20 to 84) is her greatest reward.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring book on life! 4 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Life is what you make it unless....! Even though this is Patricia Sands first book, It is the second book of Patricia's, I have read. I was so hooked on 'The Promise of Provence', I had to check out this one. Yes, the title intrigued me, but oh my goodness, this book on friendship is the best! The journey will take you through the lives of a group of friends. They are strong in their own way, but need each other too, as friends do. This story will make you laugh, cry and want to give all your best friends, a hug. I took this book to heart, anyone could be or already have been one of these women portrayed, in real life. As an avid reader, and read this on kindle for connivence, I wanted to hold this book. Excellent author, read this, gift it and of course pass it on!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Travelling Life's Long Road 5 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Reading Patricia Sand's The Bridge Club feels a little like taking a long road trip with a friend, she drives as we listen to her narrate this story of eight female characters, a condensed version of their lives, her voice like the gentle thrum of the engine, lulling us at times into a companionable silence, we listen and observe the passing landscape of years, immersing into these lives as if they were our own.

After forty years of friendship a group of friends are to spend a weekend at a mountain cottage, a location they have been to many times before, only this weekend will see them face a challenge unlike any other they have had to live through to date. Acknowledging the importance that this group of friends has been in each of their lives, affectionately referred to as BC, the Bridge Club, they each share their SOS, 'support of sisters' moment before facing the ultimate test of friendship that awaits them.

"They could each identify at least one time or experience, some lasting longer than others, when family or other support was not the answer and the BC had come to the rescue."

In this way each of the characters are introduced and we learn of a significant event in their lives that required this band of sisters to come together and thrash out a problem in a way that left no other option than to resolve the dilemma shared. It gets inside the minds of how a group of women think and they aren't always necessary in agreement, but by the end they will have agreed on a course of action that has the support of them all and often some kind of intervention as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars What wonderful leading ladies! 19 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
What a wonderful book exploring the enduring friendships of a group of women through 4 decades of their every changing lives. Their loyalty throughout the most difficult of situations is strong and their love for one another equally strong. These women all come from a variety of backgrounds and each is met with an event in their life where they call upon The Bridge club to help and support them during difficult times. There is never any question that each of the women will be there for one another.
I loved this book. It reminded me of the special friendship I share with a group of girlfriends. I hope we will remain as full of fun and have such a love of life as these wonderful women do in this great book. A real tear-jerker too!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Bridge Club - An Appreciation - Sue Uden 15 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The nugget at the centre of The Bridge Club is in Patricia's last sentence of her Afterword, 'To have a good friend, you must be a good friend.' By learning about an individual hurdle in the lives of each of the eight members of the Bridge Club, and how they were supported by the other seven in their journey over that hurdle and landing on the other side, the reader absorbs a true feeling of the bond that has developed between these women over their forty plus years of friendship. As a reader of a similar age, and one who has experienced more than one, or two, of the hurdles covered, my guess is that this novel will hold plenty of interest for women of any age.
The poignant and controversial hurdle covered in the last chapter is the one I think we all, man or woman, most dread and yet here it is covered with such compassion and friendship amongst these friends that it somehow diminishes that fear. Everyone needs friends like these.
My little missing star is because for me, and completely subjectively and probably because I am impatient, some of the chapters could have had less small detail without losing impact. Otherwise a highly recommended read.
