Product Description

The body of a woman is found in the middle of the Øresund Bridge. Half of it belongs to a Swedish politician, the other half to a Danish prostitute. Trapped in the middle of the bridge connecting Sweden and Denmark, a bi-national investigatory team is put together to solve the crime. Laid-back Danish family man, Martin, and Swedish single woman, Saga, have to work together to stop the horrific staged murders before the terrorist wins over public opinion with his anti-corruption agenda.

Please note: This television series contains Swedish and Danish audio, with English subtitles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Perfect 8 May 2012
By J.Wild
Format:DVD
The Bridge for me surpasses all those dramas which have come before from our Danish/Swedish cousins. I thought The Killing was excellent, I felt Varg Veum was superb but The Bridge takes the veiwer to another level in appreciation for both the production and delivery of a top notch crime drama.
If we could produce drama half as good as this I'd never quibble about my licence fee ever again.
The characters are presented as human and flawed and you become invested in what happens to them, even the unpleasant ones.
Unlike many of our own dramas I found myself experiancing a whole range of emotions as I followed the case to its total 'none Hollywood' conclusion.
Cant wait for series two...........

5.0 out of 5 stars Another 5 star thrilling crime drama 3 Jun 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Hats off to the writers of this brilliantly constructed thriller series. On the credits there were a whole team of them, and that's got to be the way to craft such a complex original plot into such a must-watch television series. So often our own domestic tv crime drama is the work of a single person who can't possibly compete with a team creatively.

But to me it matters not a jot as clearly the BBC Acquistions team have shown they can spot brilliance in the output of other countries' television production companies. After 'Mad Men' 'The Killing' etc now we have 'The Bridge'. Over 10 episodes its a visual treat, with locations changing continously, with the combined Danish/Swedish police forces always several steps behind the fast-moving story. Character-development is a key ingredient and in this there are so many well-drawn characters to root for - just as in 'Mad Men'. I especially liked the Danish actor playing Martin, and also his mercurial wife, Messe, I think she was called. But there's many more to enjoy as the entwined plot unravels.

A DvD treat not to be missed

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant 13 July 2012
By Elp1983

My other half bought this series on Itunes and I have to say I knew nothing about it. Being someone who hasnt yet watched The Killing I wasnt sure what to expect. I have to say it totally blew me away. We watched the whole 10 episodes in the space of 2 days, it was gripping, funny, emotional, wow it was just brilliant. Recommend to anyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars good performances, shame about the plot ! 29 Mar 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Bridge begins well enough with a mystery, great main characters and a culture clash between Sweden and Denmark. However by episode 5 the crime has become so overburdened with significance that we are in the territory of a "state of the world" critique. Then in the latter episodes we are back to a fairly basic crime thriller/ revenge tragedy. There are so many brutal sadistic incidents that one obsessive psychopath would have been stretched far beyond his limits. The police forces of Denmark and Sweden would have had the CIA and MI5 breathing down their necks by the time factories were burning, in fact Dr Who might have been called to lend a hand !
It is a shame it gets so implausible as the acting is fine throughout and it is worth watching for the great performance of Sofia Helin alone, Saga is a great character and it would be good to see more of her, but sadly The Bridge is nowhere near as good as The Killing in terms of plot and emotional truth !

If you're reading this and wondering why you should buy the show - having seen a (very) few negatives reviews on amazon. Here in a nutshell is why.
It's not safe TV. It's not cosy. It's completely unlike [Midsomer Murders : The Classic Collection (4 Disc Box Set) [DVD]or any other tame formulaic UK detective show. You have to work out for yourself over 10 episodes, what's happening and who is who.
You also need to have an appreciation of the idea of 'human darkness' - in terms of subject matter and also psychological motivation. This show isn't for the particularly fainthearted.

And for those who have issues with 'liking' Saga or Martin, the 2 leads, I can only say you might be happier watching [Heartbeat - The Complete First Series [DVD] or [Murder, She Wrote - Season 1 [DVD] . Yes, Saga in particular is an 'interesting' character, as Sarah Lund in The Killing was. And yes, you might find her behavior baffling. But she's written and acted that way for a REASON and over the 10 episodes, you do see progression of her character and (Martin's) so by the end of the series your perception of both of them has changed. I won't add any spoilers but just trust me on this!

As for the blu-ray edition. It is more expensive but like The Killing - Series 1-3 [Blu-ray the show was shot with HD cameras - so if you have a bluray player and a decent HD telly (and also a decent sound system) you'll really appreciate the difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bridge 13 Dec 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Typical top quality European drama. Great actors that suit the part. I would recommend this film to anyone interested in crime or mystery.
not being a native of Europe, never been there, the film gives an insight to the local living and geographical settings of the region.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this noir
Scandi-noir's very best in my view. Brilliant. Knocks all the others into a cocked hat. Everyone is damaged - even the good guys. No glamourisation just a great, believable story.
