Product Description

Product Description

The Brecker Brothers have had a profound impact on a great range of modern music. Trumpeter Randy and saxophonist Michael were virtuoso instrumentalists, but they also made music that drove jazz, pop, rock, soul and blues in new directions. Both men topped lists of ‘most wanted’ session musicians, and by their presence as sidemen on great numbers of albums, their style of music permeated the industry. However, it was their 1970s work as leaders of the ground-breaking band, The Brecker Brothers, that helped drive the engine of jazz-rock-soul fusions and contribute significantly to the way we hear music today. This book is as much about the amazing contributions made by a community of brilliant session musicians as it is about cutting-edge work by disciples of Miles and Trane. Musicians such as Steve Gadd, David Sanborn, Don Grolnick, Will Lee, Steve Khan and Peter Erskine are just some of the many musicians who appear throughout this study. The full story of the Brecker Brothers’ contributions to music is told here for the first time through a detailed study of their recorded works. Listeners will be guided through a selection of Brecker recordings, whilst fans of LPs and CDs will find rich rewards amongst the comprehensive discography.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brecker Brothers 24 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is much like the others in this authors series on jazz fusion being a resume of the artists career together with a detailed discography. A real labour of love on this one as the Breckers have appeared on a huge number of records in a 40 year career. The author not only lists the brothers own records but those where they appeared as guests or session players. A drawback with these sort of books is that the author rates each record which of course is a matter of personal taste. I don't have a problem with this and find it interesting to compare my views with his which are broadly comparable, others may not like this approach. Clearly a niche market as the brothers are probably the least well known subjects of this authors other books on jazz fusion but well worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Ken Trethewey 6 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The Brecker Brothers: Funky Sea, Funky Blue is the latest book and easily the best in Trethewey's jazz-fusion series, all are excellent and a must for all jazz lovers. Where he scores is his in depth research on all of the Brecker Brother's releases, their own individual recordings as well as their various session work and guest appearances, carefull analysis and descriptions of their recordings together with his star ratings help the novice fan, you may disagree with some of Ken's personal views, but discussion is what the love of music is all about, its obvious Ken is a huge fusion fan and knows what he's talking about. Highly recomended read, packed full of facts and a useful reference and listening guide - Rick Meek
