Product Description

Product Description

Compiled by UK DJ Patrick Forge, The Brazilian Funk Experience hooks into Patrick's personal love affair with the funky 70s Brazilian sound, digging deeper than deep into the respected EMI Odeon Label. Here he presents 20 solid gold Brazilian nuggets, most as rare as hen's teeth and on CD for the first time. Strangely every melody and jazz break sounds sooo familiar... might just be you've heard it on a radio show or at a club round London town. And it might just have been Patrick or one of his followers that was spinning tunes behind the decks at the time. So people, get on your Rio shoes and enjoy the grooves.

5.0 out of 5 stars At this price what's stopping you? 12 April 2007

Some real gems here. Granted some of the tracks have been released on other compilation records (namely Gilles Peterson's; indeed Forge used to DJ with Gilles back in the eighties; check out their excellent Dingwalls record) but that's because the songs are excellent. There's a nice mix of funk, jazz, folk and soul here that is sure to make your average party goer stand up, take notice, and applaud your unique and well flavoured musical taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funky Stuff 23 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
There are a plethora of compilations of Brasilian music many of varying quality. How good this one is may depend on your idea of what the music of Brasil actually is. If you're looking for the frentic high speed samba rhythms most associated with the carnivals of Rio then you'll be disappointed this collection. What you get here is a little more, well, funky.

The timescale covers the period when a new generation of musicians came into promenence throuough the MBP movement. These musicians took the traditional music of Brasil and fused it with the modern sounds of Western popular music to create something distinctively Brasilian which would encourage young Brasilians to buy somehting other than The Beatles. Yet it wasn't just the pyschedelic sounds which were embraced and absorbed. For every Beatles fan it seems there were those who wanted to add something akin to James Brown or Sly & The Family Stone. The results of these fusions are found on Patrick Forge's rather excellent compliataion.

Whether or not you can dance to this stuff doesn't matter as you get some irresistible grooves and some extraordinaryly wonderful songs. Highlights include the wonderful "Nereci" by Djavan & Mariazinha and two tracks from Doris Montiero which, although quite different, are exceptionally rewarding. The funk here is more of the breakbeat kind and this is the sort of compilation which might appeal as much to those looking for a good break as much as anything else. Including MBP legends Elis Regina and Marcos Valle - whose "Garra" is my highlight of the entire set - gives some star quality too. Some of the tracks feel more rooted in the 60's than the set may imply, yet it's a wonderful set.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not that funky 7 Oct 2009
Format:Audio CD
I have come to really enjoy some of the tracks on here, but I feel it's a little bit misnamed. It just ain't that funky. If it had said the "Brazilian Jazz experience" or the "Bossa Nova experience", I probably would have been pleasantly surprised by how groovy some of the tunes are. As it is, I was happy, but not over the moon. Still like Pat Forge though!

3.0 out of 5 stars Promised much delivered average 6 Dec 2008
Format:Audio CD
As a fan of the PF I indulged as the cover has all the hallmarks of some classics along with some unheard nuggets to complete things. The price is great though I did feel a tad let down by what sounded to me like some fairly jaded and a little plastic sounding brazilian beats which needed a big shot of caffeine to liven things up. It's more 2.5 short I'd give it a miss
