Tortoise and Will Oldham have been mutual admirers of each other’s work for years, but they never got around to working with one another. That has all changed as Chicago’s finest post-rockers enlist Oldham (in his Bonnie Prince Billy guise) to record an album of cover versions. On The Brave & The Bold, these quite natural bedfellows rework ten very different tracks by artists as diverse as Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and Milton Nascimento. The album starts out well with a cracking version of Nascimento’s "Cravo E Canela" that retains the original’s upbeat Latino-rock spirit. The songs that follow are all interesting choices but offer mixed results. Richard Thompson’s superlative "The Calvary Cross" and Devo’s energetic "That’s Pep!" are certainly effective, as is the stylish version of Don William’s "Pancho"; but the versions of Springsteen’s "Thunder Road" and Elton John’s "Daniel" feel bloodless. And that’s the problem in general: despite a plethora of inspired moments and several great covers, the album in general vies too often for a nonchalant middle ground.--Paul Sullivan

5.0 out of 5 stars amazon, what poop! 21 Mar 2006

i am surprised at the amazon.co.uk review of this album...
according to paul sullivan, 'the versions of Springsteen’s "Thunder Road" and Elton John’s "Daniel" feel bloodless. And that’s the problem in general: despite a plethora of inspired moments and several great covers, the album in general vies too often for a nonchalant middle ground'...
this is downright despicable and unjust! both thunder road and daniel are the most heart wrenching, powerful, moving, impassioned ..dammit: gorgeous songs on the album..
every time i hear thunder road i feel like jumping into the nearest car and taking off in any which direction....i feel like driving for hours and hours and never stopping [which is hard, and nigh impossible as i dont drive]...i feel like walking out of work and never returning....
and daniel..gosh...it's too too much..
paul sullivan i challenge you to eat your words!
or a duel perhaps?...

Will Oldham aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy is one if the most inspired, inspirational and forward thinking artists in contemporary music. But this album of covers - a collaboration with Tortoise - is the fourth consecutive non-proper release from Oldham who is struggling to match or even follow up the phenomenal 'Mater and Everyone' (from 2003). For 'The Brave and the Bold' - Oldham takes a back seat musically and leaves the playing to Tortoise.

This album sounds like it was recorded in super quick time - the arrangements plodding along and lacking the twists and turns inherent in Oldham music. 'Daniel' starts with potential, but just drifts and loses tension. Much of the album is like this. 'Thunder road' is the exception.

Will Oldham is clearly at a cross-roads - the new proper Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album, recorded in Iceland in late 2005 is due late this year. As a massive fan, I can only hope with anticipation he has regained form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gem found in abandoned mine 15 Jun 2006
Format:Audio CD
In the often lacklustre and uninspiring world of contemporary music a diamond shines thru the gloom. An album of covers may make most music fans groan with despair but this is the exception to the rule. Turning the originals into something of exceptional beauty and joy this album is truely astonishing.
