United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Remastered, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Director Sidney J. Furie was betwixt and between his Canadian TV work and his theatrical-film prominence vis-a-vis Ipcress File (1965) when he helmed the British social melodrama The Boys. The title characters are four youths, all implicated in the murder of a night watchman. Robert Morley plays the defence attorney who tries to convince the jury to render a charitable verdict. His basic argument is that the government expects a death sentence in cases involving robbery, but is more lenient towards crimes of passion. Prosecuting attorney Richard Todd is unmoved; his job is to prove that the boys aren't the innocent victims of society they're made out to be. With the original music by "The Shadows" ...The Boys (1962)

The Boys 31 May 2010
Format:DVD
Four teenagers set off for a night out. From less than affluent backgrounds, they find their lack of spending power somewhat limits their options,
leading to some frustration as the evening moves on. After the night is over, the four find themselves up on a murder charge. (This is revealed
early in the film). Much of the movie is spent reliving events of the night as seen through the eyes of the boys and also as seen by several
witnesses. One aspect which perhaps dates this movie a little is that the high spirited behaviour of the boys, while at times somewhat anti- social,
would not, these days, be considered as menacing as it obviously was back then. Having said that, I still found it a most enjoyable watch which kept
my interest right to the end.

Shown very rarely on television and unavailable for years on DVD, The Boys is a tense courtroom drama from the days when the death penalty existed for murder. First class performances all round. The flashback structure, often irritating in films, here gives an insight into the way working class young people lived in the early 1960s, as well as the impossible gulf between the legalistic narrative as submitted in court and the reality.

I'd have bought this one right away if it hadn't been for the fact that it looks from the illustration on the product page that they've misspelled Robert Morley's name in quite large lettering on the cover. Very poor - how does that kind of thing happen? (UPDATE: I've now bought the DVD and it turns out they've corrected the mistake! Five stars!)
