Two thirds of this latest Boys only confirms suspicions aroused by the subpar Highland Laddie. Verbose, gratuitous and largely pointless it waffles through an alarming amount of pages, moving the story along not an inch.
Most of the material is spent on nothing more than going over backstory hinted at in previous issues- something I'm sure most readers had already put together anyway. There's nothing particularly revelatory there at all. Having it all spelled out, apart from being vaguely patronising, kind of destroys a lot of the mystique.
Having said all that, the writing does eventually pull it's socks up and the final portion gets pretty good again, beginning to go into Butcher's character more.
This series is really sailing close to the wind now. After such a great beginning it now seems to be really struggling, with the writing dragging things out to ridiculous lengths and some decidedly ropey artwork in places. I'll be getting the next one as I'd like to see how it ends, but can't help but feel that the damage has already been done.
