Product Description

Product Description

For a millionth of a second the car grazed the drenched moorland. If it had come down on any other patch of ground Finn would simply have been another statistic. Death by dangerous driving. But the car hit the surface of the Earth at Exit 43. It slid through the membrane like a hot knife through butter, plunging into the darkness and catapulting Finn from its shattered windscreen as it fell. Finn Oliver knows he'll never come to terms with his father's death, but joy-riding over the moors in his mum's beat-up old car is a quick fix of freedom and forgetting. Until the accident happens - and Finn finds himself hurtling through the wafer-thin divide between the worlds of the living and the dead. Adventurous, charming and poignant by turns, "The Boy Who Fell Down Exit 43" is a quirky debut novel laced with humour and a dollop of magic.

About the Author

Harriet Goodwin read medieval English at Oxford University before training as a professional singer. She sang and toured with a number of acclaimed ensembles, and after the birth of her fourth child she had a vivid dream about a boy who fell through the surface of the Earth into the Underworld - thus the novel was born. Harriet lives in Staffordshire with her family.

A great adventure 27 Sep 2009
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
This is one of the best books I've ever read. My mum bought it for me for my birthday after we saw the writer in a bookshop talking about the book and reading out bits of it. She made the story sound great fun, and I wanted to know what happened next.
I don't have much time to read and it usually takes me ages to finish books at school but I read this without stopping. It's really exciting, it's funny, it's scary, and in one place it's so sad I cried.
My younger sister (I'm 13 and she's 11) is now reading it and she loves it too.
The author said she's written another book. I can't wait to get it.

I could not recommend a more exciting, mesmerising children's book to read right now. I took this book away on holiday to Marrakech and literally had to be dragged away from it to appreciate the city. I was far too engrossed to want to leave it behind in our room! This compelling, beautifully composed story has all the elements of a traditional tale combined with a plethora of inventive, modern twists. Hilarious and extremely sad at times, this book has everything to offer for children and adults who simply love a fantastic story. As a teacher I can also say that it would work extremely well as a class reader due to the themes it explores and the language within it. Don't wait: buy it now!!

As a child of 50 odd years, I loved this book. The back cover is a very accurate preview of a fascinating and great book. The beautiful front cover draws you into a world inhabited by scarily real, generous and fleshed-out (oops, sorry!) characters. There are lots of Lady Fortescues, Bloodaxes,Morgans, Finns, Edrics and Glenriddings about in real life for us to recognise their characters and they all speak wonderful colloquial English. Jessie is lovely and Oliver is full of energy, inquisitiveness, kindness and humour. Some words will cause some younger readers to consult either their parents or a dictionary but that is good. This is a full-on action-packed adventure with a clever weepy ending and lots of thought-provoking bits for all ages. Can't wait for the next one! Well done Harriet.
