By Mr. T. Anderson TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I am a big David Bowie fan (as I guess will be most purchasers of this CD) and first noticed Garson's work in the magnificent, edgy accompaniment to Aladdin Sane - specifically, that track, though he makes a great contribution to the entire album.

Garson played on many of Bowie's albums, from Ziggy Stardust through to Reality, and made a key contribution to the sound. I particularly like his work on David Live, Bowie's live album from 1974, but it is consistently good, which is no doubt why he remained part of the band.

This CD is I guess a kind of tribute and reflection on his work with Bowie; one of the tracks is actually called Tribute to David. Garson performs solo piano variations on a number of Bowie's songs. Note that these are variations, not performances as such, and since Garson is a creative jazz pianist they really are variations; in some cases it takes a while to work out what the song is, even if you know Bowie's version well.

The performance is excellent, and the recording quality is outstanding. Why not five stars? This may sound strange, but I found it a little too mellow and smooth for my taste. Perhaps Garson needs the interplay with the band to spark that edgy quality that I love.

Piano Interpretations from the Man Who's Been There from the Start (Nearly...) 18 July 2011
By John C. Bowerman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Mike Garson played keyboards on Bowie's first American tour in 1973 and subsequently played the memorable piano solo on Aladdin Sane (from the album of the same name). Garson went on to play on no fewer than 14 official Bowie albums including 10 studio albums:

1973: Aladdin Sane
1973: Pinups
1974: Diamond Dogs
1975: Young Americans
1993: Black Tie White Noise
1993: The Buddha of Suburbia
1995: Outside
1997: Earthling
2000: Heathen
2003: Reality

So, who better than he to present an album of piano compositions inspired by the works of Mr. Bowie? The answer, obviously, is no one. This CD is an 11-song sonic expedition through Bowie's catalog that only Garson could lead. Each track is sprinkled with recognizable melodies from the original songs (some more obvious than others). For those who enjoy solo piano recordings (no additional instruments or musicians whatsoever), this is an interesting and relaxing listen - a very subtle way to get a Bowie fix.

If you are looking for pure rock or vintage Bowie, this is not for you. If you are looking for a true artist's jazz interpretations of some of Bowie's most original work, then you will not be disappointed.

A Class Act 13 Dec 2011
By Sirgwyn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Mike Garson played the Detroit Institute of Arts recently and showcased many of these tunes. He's an engaging conversationalist, pianist and a true virtuoso. We spoke after the show and he agreed that David Bowie's album "Outside", which featured Mr. Garson's work, was one of the most underrated records of the 90's. Not only was it ahead of its time as a creative concept record, but it also featured many tunes that stood out on their own.

This recording of variations on Bowie compositions takes a fresh look at the DB cannon and is enjoyable in an avant garde sort of way.
Brilliant!...Brilliant! 1 Mar 2012

Having owned previous Mike Garson lp's, I was fully aware that his own recording style is not the rock/fusion exravagance of Aladdin Sane; but,the more sentimentally subtle. These are fine vignettes of David's very harmonious melodies:like Beethoven Bagatelles. At first one is taken aback by the quiet beauty of this work. One shakes ones head at not expecting the soaring rock propulsions;then one is struck, instead, by the sheer sweet lilting leader lines. The more one listens to this the more one appreciates the Bowie/ness of it. The more one appreciates Mike Garson. I guess what I'm saying here is that this is one very pretty piano cd. Well done, never tiring. This one is right up there with George Winston's December,of which the Pachebel's Canon with middle 8 in ragtime definitely turned my head around. Mike's cd has many suprising twists and turns, also. For instance,"Let's Dance" is totally undanceable unless you are Rudolph Nureyev or, Elaine from Seinfeld. Bowie music is truly magic, one could cast spells to it.It could make you into a changling. What a treasure Mike Garson is! Let's start an Imaginary David Bowie museum of modern arts and performances, with a Mike Garson wing with cover art.Brilliant!...Brilliant!
