DVD Description
Vanessa Redgrave (in an Oscar-nominated performance) and Christopher Reeve are the stars of The Bostonians, Merchant Ivory Productions' acclaimed 1084 screen adaptation of the Henry James classic, which charts the struggle between two charismatic forces - a feminist and a chauvinist - to gain control over the destiny of a young spirited woman. The story takes place in Boston in the aftermath of the American Civil War - a time of political and social turmoil. Verena Tarrant (Madeleine Potter), a gifted young orator, has attracted the attention of Olive Chancellor (Redgrave), who wishes to nurture Verena as an inspirational force for the Women's Movement. But ranged against her is Basil Ransom (Reeve), a handsome male chauvinist, who wants Verena as his wife. Against a backdrop of luminous New England landscapes, battle is joined, and for Olive the struggle will prove an odyssey that forces her to acknowledge both her true nature and her true calling as an articulate champion of women's rights. The Bostonians also starts Oscar-winners Jessica Tandy and Linda hunt.

Format:DVD
Not the best film directed by James Ivory, but still a delightful romantic story. Acting wise, Vanessa Redgrave is as great as ever, whereas the heroin of the story lacks a bit of presence. Not having read the book by Henry James, it is difficult to know how faithful the film was to it. However, the film, or better, its adaptation to the screen, looks a bit stretched and lacks a bit of climax.
