Reviews

Small screen adaptation of the children's novels by Mary Norton. The Clock family are 'borrowers' - four inch-high people who live under the floorboards of a big house, borrowing whatever they need from the 'human beans' who own it. Christopher Eccleston, Victoria Wood and Stephen Fry star.

Fantastic adaptation; it managed to get all the family together on boxing day! Having read Mary Norton's original I was doubtful that I would like it (there are not many adaptations that I do really like!) but since the plot was original and interesting, I found that I wasn't comparing it to the original all the time and could enjoy it!

After the brilliant 'Arrietty' another take on the much loved books comes along and finally there is a live action version worth watching. I thought this film was superb entertainment and far better than the awful film version! 5 stars!

This is a typical Stephen Fry and worth watchimg for his performance alone. The mixing of the two sizes of people was very well done.

Perfect entertainment. The opening scene shows Christopher Eccleston diving into a huge tin of Quality Street and that's pretty much how I felt whilst watching this. Bright, colourful fun for all the family - and not sickly sweet either. Brilliant!

To be honest, I am getting a bit annoyed with all the self-styled critics slating this for being different from the original. Isn't that the point of re-makes? a new interpretation to suit a new demographic? the truth of it is this; yes, it has moved away from the quaint, cutesyness of both book and original screenplays. No, it doesn't have the simplistic beauty the originals have. It has it's own. There are some questionable performances from a couple of the seasoned pros but there are also some stand-out performances new talent which is great to see. the writing is clever and up to date without alienating a generation who grew up with the originals and are open-minded enough to welcome a fresh spin on things. the direction is slick and it never feels over-produced which, contrary to some people's opinions, helps to keep the viewer at "bean" level.

All in all this is a fun-filled film that, unlike most films and programmes of late, can bring a family together to enjoy together. There is enough of the original magic to generate waves of nostalgia for the oldies blended with enough whizzy, exciting action sequences to quench the thirst of today's youthful audience, thus prolonging the life of a classic for many more years to come.

I had looked in every shop for this dvd but couldn't find it. My daughter loves this version of The Borrowers and was delighted when she unwrapped it Christmas morning. Thank you Amazon.
