Lucy Hull, a young children's librarian in Hannibal, Missouri, finds herself both kidnapper and kidnapped when her favourite patron, ten-year-old Ian Drake, runs away from home. The precocious Ian is addicted to reading, but needs Lucy's help to smuggle books past his overbearing mother, who has enrolled Ian in weekly anti-gay classes. When Lucy finds Ian camped out in the library after hours with a backpack of provisions and an escape plan, she allows herself to be hijacked by him and the pair embark on a spontaneous road trip. But is it just Ian who is running away? And should Lucy really be trying to save a boy from his own parents?

A wonderful story about a boy and young women both trying to find and understand themselves, with the help of the magic of books. A warm story of friendship interspersed with a road trip across America. Made me long for days spent in libraries of my youth. An enjoyable engaging read with literary references scattered throughout. Read and enjoy, I did.

Picked this up from my local library when I needed a paperback for a long train journey; it was such a lovely book that I stopped reading before the end so that I could save it for the return journey! An exciting easy-read book with a real 'feelgood' feeling, I've now bought it as a Christmas gift for a friend who will also appreciate the literary references and the gentle humour.
