Joseph Smith Fletcher was one of the pioneers of the 'Golden Age' of crime, and was popular on both sides of the Atlantic. Although mostly forgotten in this country he was one of the leading writers of the genre in his day.
Set in the fictional Northern town of Highmarket, Messrs Mallalieu and Cotherstone are both well to do businessmen, as well as being part of the local council. Mallalieu is the mayor, and Cotherstone is the borough treasurer. But both these men are hiding a secret, and when Mr Kitely comes to town he threatens to expose them, unless they pay for his silence. But suddenly Kitely turns up dead, and Mallalieu is convinced that his partner, Cotherstone did it. As the police start their investigations another man is arrested for the murder, but did any of these men commit it?
With another death and another investigation gradually a web of secrets and mysteries are unravelled, as more than the police are caught up in the investigation.
Admittedly this isn't the best book Fletcher wrote, but it is easy to get into, and moves along at a rapid pace. Although the active table of contents isn't available on the Go To menu, you can click on each chapter heading to go to it if you click on the beginning button. If you like the old great crime tales, then this should prove a fun read.

This is a terrific book. I have never cpme across JS Fletcher before, but I am definitely going get his other novels.
This is well written, with good english and the "old fashioned" feel (it is set in around 1911) makes it even nicer to read.
No car chases, no bad language and almost no technology.
