Two brothers (from the McManus family) decide to rid Boston of its mobsters - one by one. A local cop (Defoe) tries to track them down and stop the systematic killing. But then the Detective begrudgingly thinks - maybe the Irish boys are doing him and the city he loves a genuine favour? "The Boondock Saints" was so well received - it even spawned a sequel nearly a decade later...

However - fans of this gritty thriller will see that there are two versions of this film. And they should also note that the 'Unrated Director's Cut' out of Denmark is the BLU RAY to buy. Unfortunately the 20th Century Fox 'US' release is REGION A LOCKED - so it will not play on the vast majority of our machines unless they're chipped to be 'all regions' (which most aren't).

Although the Danish issue has foreign language all over its box - it's REGION B - and therefore will play the English film on our problem...

With not much hope of an actual UK release - the Euro option is the way to go...

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't Turn The Subtitles Off! 3 Feb 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS MOVIE! Would have given it a 5 out of 5...

You can't turn the bloody subtitles off and they sit at the bottom of the picture and not in the black lines at the top or bottom of the screen!

4.0 out of 5 stars A big surprise 11 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This movie is probably the biggest surprise ever. I expected a standard action movie with little in the way of originality. For whatever reason it was not shown at the cinemas in my country, that alone is usually a bad sign.
Those that enjoyed "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" would probably like this one too. They are both similar in the way that they are action-movies where characters and dialogue are more important than special effects and massive shoot-outs("The Matrix" is typical).
To cut it short it's about two irish-american brothers that believe they're on a mission from God. That mission is more or less to put bullets through every criminal they cross. It doesn't matter if it's russian or italian mob, or simply street-walking scum, they will all get a bullet sooner or later.
The story is straightforward, it's the way it's told that sets it apart. The dialogue is great, the characters also(especially Defoe as an eccentric FBI-agent). The scene where the brothers meet the hitman called "Il Duce" is just awesome. It may be bloody sometimes, but it doesn't matter cause it's always funny to watch.
It might not be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it's arguably one of the funniest movies since the old Monty Python Classics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts big-budget action films to shame. 7 Nov 2003
By Mr. E. Selous VINE VOICE
I am a fool for not watching this film sooner. A complete fool. I spurned it because I had never heard of the director, producer, the actors on the box, never seen it advertised - nothing.
Well, let me assure you that this puts films like The Matrix to shame. Shot on a tight schedule with a tiny budget, this is one of the best action films I have ever seen.
The acting from the on-screen brothers (portrayed by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus - who?) isn't oscar-winning, but the acting by Willem Dafoe as a camp FBI agent and David Della Rocco (as an Italian mafia delivery boy) is brilliant. This is the only film that Troy Duffy has directed and I don't know why. This direction and cinematography are nothing short of sublime, the script (also written by Troy Duffy) is excellent and the editing is superb.
Its an intresting storyline, people have bashed it as 'a catholic school boy fantasy' but this is a silly notion, its a fluid and enthralling storyline with no end of brilliant gun-fights and great conversation.
Don't end up kicking yourself like me, buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best film I've never seen at the cinema 27 Feb 2003
A film I've watched and will watch over and over again. Perhaps it's not politically correct in this age of concern over religious fundamentalism, but since the targets of these 'saints' are *only* murderous criminals, that's okay. It involves two brothers (like in the Blues Brothers). They're catholics (like the Blues Brothers). They dress mainly in black and wear dark glasses (like the Blues Brothers) and they appear to be on a mission from god (like ... well you get the picture). Only they don't wear hats or sing and they do kill quite a lot of bad men. These boys are, in fact, just your average, run of the mill, multi-lingual, tattooed, Irish immigrant vigilantes in a city full of organised crime that the legal system is not managing to control. The police are their biggest fans - especially the camp FBI guy (Willem Dafoe) - and by the end of the film, have-a-go members of the public want teams of 'saints' operating in every major city.
It's funny and even moving occasionally. The acting is good (good enough for me anyway). The pretend Irish accents alone, are enough to cheer me up on a bad day. Billy Connolly, the boys' long-lost "da", appears in the second half of the film, having spent the past 25 years locked up in paranoid-level security conditions that would make Hannibal Lecter's conditions of incarceration seem liberal and humane. He plays a sort of sword-of-god, gun-slinger, carrying a huge arsenal. Considering that most people tend to think of him as a comedian and musician, he does "sinister, death-dealing, god-botherer" very well indeed.
This film may carry a message about self-help justice. If that's political, fortunately for me, I'm not sufficiently politically aware to let it spoil my enjoyment. I highly recommend it.
