Product Description

The Book of Jubilees
translated by R. H. Charles

The Book of Jubilees, or, as it is sometimes called, The Little Genesis, purports to be a revelation given by God to Moses through the medium of an angel and contains a history, divided up into "jubilee periods" of 49 years, from creation to the coming of Moses. Although the actual narrative of events is only carried down to Moses's birth and early career, its author envisages the events of a later time and in particular certain events of special interest at the time he wrote, which was probably in the latter years of the 2nd century B.C. This work, though containing one or two passages of an apocalyptic character, is quite unlike the typical apocalypses. It is largely based upon the historical narratives in Genesis and Exodus, interspersed with legends and emphasizing certain legal practices (such as the strict observance of the Sabbath, circumcision, etc.). The author's main object is to inculcate a reform in the regulation of the calendar and festivals in place of the lunar calendar, which he condemns. He proposes to substitute a solar calendar consisting of 12 months and containing 364 days. The result of such a system is to make all festivals, except the Day of Atonement, fall on a Sunday--a radical idea for its day. With notes clarifying the translation, this is an important text for students of the origins of Christianity and Essene teachings.

From the Back Cover

The Book of Jubilees is an early ancient Jewish religious work, and translated by English biblical scholar and theologian, R. H. Charles. It was considered an important work for early Christian writers, and was also suppressed to the extent that no Latin or Greek versions survived. Once a part of the Jewish midrash, it is still used widely by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The Book of Jubilees is highly recommended for those who are interested in early Christian and Jewish writings, and also those who are interested in the publications translated by R. H. Charles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating insight into aspects of genesis 20 Nov 2010

Format:Kindle Edition
This is like a more detailed version of Genesis which interesting clarifications on certain things not made clear in genesis such as the demonic spirits who started to influence mankind and aid them in the invention of tools of war and things like outward adorments, also explains the interpretation of genesis that Adam died within the same day he ate from the tree, the one day being from God's perspective of 1000 years.
Also speaks of masterma / satan and how He placated God to allow him to keep a portion of his demons on earth to tempt and influence mankind. God bound the majority of the demonic forces in hell after they were influencing and abusing mankind and copulating with women to produce giants in the land. These are called the watchers, the fallen angels who had spiritual intercourse with women and made them produce giants, the nephilim.
After this God bound those fallen angels into hell under the earth, but allows satan to have a small portion of his demons to remain on earth because of mans wickedness, this seems to have given satan a hold or some type of legal authority to still have some control and presence on earth spiritually.
God allows satan to have a small portion of his fallen angel followers remain on earth that they may have influence over those humans who offer them a doorway perhaps and are in kinhood with them.
Small additional pieces of information and clarification really opens your eyes, this should be included in the Bible I think, but most of it is covered in Genesis. It can offer greater insights and understanding of what is going on spiritually behind the scenes.

I got the book the other day and have begun reading it. However, I feel the article below does a very good job of describing it briefly.

The Book of Jubilees is an account of the Biblical history of the world from creation to Moses. It is divided into periods ('Jubilees') of 49 years. For the most part the narrative follows the familiar account in Genesis, but with some additional details such as the names of Adam and Eve's daughters, and an active role for a demonic entity called 'Mastema'. The anonymous author is interested in calendar reform, and uses Jubilees as a platform for proposing a solar calendar of 364 days and 12 months; this would have been a radical departure from the Jewish Calendar, which is lunar-based. There are also a couple of messianic, apocalyptic passages, although quite a bit less than the Book of Enoch.

The only complete version of Jubilees is in Ethiopian, although large fragments in Greek, Latin and Syriac are also known. It is believed that it was originally written in Hebrew. If at times one gets the impression that you are reading a first draft of Genesis, you are in good company. R.H. Charles, the translator, a distinguished academic Biblical scholar, concluded that Jubilees was a version of the Pentateuch, written in Hebrew, parts of which later became incorporated into the earliest Greek version of the Jewish Bible, the Septuagint.
