Book Description

22 Aug 2011 1856697002 978-1856697002
The skull is one of the most recognizable symbols of todays contemporary visual culture. Since its 1970s renaissance in the iconic album designs of bands such as the Grateful Dead, the skull has found its way into the visual vocabulary of urban life, adorning T-Shirts, badges and rock memorabilia as the ultimate symbol of anarchy and rebellion. Repurposed and recast by artists, illustrators and designers, it has become one of the most iconic cultural symbols of our time. In response to this cultural phenomenon, The Book of Skulls presents a cool visual guide to the skull, charting its rebirth through music and street fashion to become todays ultimate anti-establishment icon. From Black Sabbath to Cypress Hill, skater punk graffiti to Gothic tattoos, from high-couture to Hello Kitty and Dali to Damien Hirst, this book is the ultimate collection of cool and iconic skull motifs. Drawing together artwork from music, fashion, street art and graphic design The Book of Skulls is a celebration of one of todays most iconic cultural symbols.

3.0 out of 5 stars Juxtapoz style arty pictures of... skulls 17 Aug 2011
By Caramba
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A nice little art book showing lots of pictures of skulls, some illustrations, some photos, lots of pictures of sculptures ranging from Damien Hurst's diamond skull to toys & rings. In style the book is a lot like those little Taschen Icons books (about the same size), no text other than identifying captions, & a slight emphasis on artsy photos rather than straight illustration.
Overall a nice little book with a diverse range of skull images, though more of a coffee-table book rather than a source book for artists. The book has a nice arty exposed spine too.
(Strangely the Santa Muerte photo in the samples above is black & white in the book, not colour).

3.0 out of 5 stars This book is Tonto! 17 Nov 2011
By Foxey
Format:Paperback
When it comes to skull books this makes a nice companion to Skullface by Antoni Cadafalch. If Skullface is the Lone Ranger this book is Tonto. They are both worth having but if you only have money for one buy Skullface. Skullface I found more useful as a source/ideas book. Ideal illustrators and tattoo artists.
