Book Description

An action-packed thriller in the bestselling tradition of The Da Vinci Code, The Rule of Four, Equinox and Codex

Product Description

In a snowbound village in the German mountains, a young woman discovers an extraordinary secret. Before she can reveal it, she disappears. All that survives is a picture of a mysterious medieval playing card that has perplexed scholars for centuries.

Nick Ash does research for the FBI in New York. Six months ago his girlfriend Gillian walked out and broke his heart. Now he's the only person who can save her - if it's not too late. Within hours of getting her message, Nick finds himself on the run, delving deep into the past before it catches up with him.

Hunted across Europe, Nick follows Gillian's trail into the heart of a five-hundred-year-old mystery. But across the centuries, powerful forces are closing around him. There are men who have devoted their lives to keeping the secret, and they will stop at nothing to protect it.

disappointing 6 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
Being a fan of Tom Harper I was very disappointed by his latest offering. The book alternates chapters between the 15th century and the present about Gutenberg's early printing methods.I read 450 out of the 600 pages before it finally bored me to death.Maybe the subject matter isn't the thing I am into so I found myself reading just to finish the book rather than it being unputdownable.I'll still buy his next book because all his others have been superb.

Wasted time 11 July 2010
Format:Paperback
I feel that I have wasted precious reading time ploughing through 585 pages in the hope that a story might appear or a least a chilling denoument or startling revelation, sadly this was not to be. Mr Harper works well with the historical detail (where available)but not quite so with his characters, I found myself not really caring what happened to them. Chapters alternating between the past and the modern day began as a novelty, after four chapters this became predictable and boring. I admire Mr Harper's technical writing skills, however, finding oneself stopping to reflect on this instead of enjoying the story detracts from why I bought the book in the first place!

An excellent read... 12 Sep 2009
By LittleReader TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
It's Frankfurt, 1412, and Johann Gensfleisch is learning his craft. He narrates a twisted tale of a lifetime spent perfecting the art of mixing and honing metals which eventually leads him to the creation of the first printing presses.

It's also present day, New York, and Nick Ash is happily minding his own business when an email; a cry for help, lands in his inbox. An ex girlfriend - Gillian - is in deep trouble and she has chosen Nick to be the one to unpick the garbled clues held within the email and a strange printed playing card... What is the link to the past that Gillian desperately needs him to uncover?

This timeslip novel reads exceptionally well. I suppose it could be likened to 'The DaVinci Code' in style but the story, even though it is linked to the Church, is quite different. My only criticism is that it dragged a little towards the back quarter, nevertheless, I did finish it quickly and thoroughly enjoyed the pace overall.
Definately worth a read...

Disappointed
