5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny 17 May 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is absolutely amazing and one of the best I have ever bought! It really does what it promises in the title: gives even a beginner useful instructions on how to create realistic drawings with graphite pencil. It doesn`t deal with colours but there are lots of other books for that. This one is unique in its very easily understandable, step-by-step explanations and all the little tricks of the trade are presented generously. I have been drawing since childhood, advancing from doodles to Japanese manga characters but stopped at that point, never being able to advance to truly realistic drawings. This was quite frustrating until I restarted again 6 months ago, but I am still a very beginner artist when it comes to realistic drawings. This book helped me immensely to see what I was doing wrong and how I could correct it. I must say, with all the wonderful drawing examples, this book is a pleasure to look at and read even for someone who is not an aspiring artist, so you can imagine what a joy it is for those, who are! The book discusses several subjects in detail (inanimate objects, animals and people)and if you ever had that frustrating problem of not being able to draw just the right noses, eyes, teeth, and the curve of the face was just a little lopsided and the hair kept looking unnatural, this books shows you the right way to do it. It contains several excercises that you can do on your own, first having read the explanations. The text is professional but very easy to follow, loaded with good advice. A definite must for those, who are bent on drawing photo-like pictures and getting the pleasure from it, not to mention the oohs and aaaahs from friends and relatives when they see what you have managed to achieve. Buy now and have fun!:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 21 Feb 2014

Really impressed with this book, quite a few drawing technique books out there seemed quite self-promoting with very little instruction! This book however had great instructional techniques and just as importantly went through all the different bits of drawing equipment. Would recommend this to anyone but especially those with an interest in pencil sketching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book 11 Jun 2014

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a beginner in the field of drawing, I have found this book invaluable, it is written with humour and encouragement for the beginner, but technical enough not to put off the improver. The author is a FBI artist (among other things) she creates those photo fit pictures for wanted felons, which was what aroused my interest in the book in the first place. Her tips for shading, has been a great help. The book also suggests equipment to make life easier, the advice I have taken for proportional dividers, electric erasers etc. have all proved worthwhile.

If you are looking for a book which is both informative and well written then this is the one for you. If you are relatively new to drawing as I am then you will find this book very useful indeed. I am looking at purchasing the other books written by these husband and wife artists.
