Product Description

For nearly fifty years The Book of Indian Birds has been a close companion of the recently inducted bird-watching enthusiast as well as of the seasoned ornithologist in India. This twelfth edition is revised, but retains Dr Salim Ali's original text while describing and illustrating 240 additional species. Colour prints are used in place of the black-and-white photographs of earlier editions. The book now illustrates in colour, and succinctly describes the habits and habitats of 538 birds of the plains and foothills, and of the wetlands and sea-coast. The sequence of Orders and Families has been rearranged to facilitate reference to current ornithological literature. The book remains an indispensable field guide for everyone who wishes to enjoy the rich and varied bird life of the country. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I suppose everybody (or almost everybody) would find this useful as a starting point, but very soon its limitations become apparent. The number of species listed in this edition is just over 500, which is about about half of the total number of species to be found in the Indian subcontinent. That said, the illustrations are generally of a high standard and the accompanying text is detailed and useful. Overall, a good first buy but will need to be supplemented by another, more comprehensive guide for the serious birder.

A fantastic book 7 July 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is really the definitive book for novice birdwatchers in India, and remains very useful even as you grow more experienced. Its small size makes it much more portable and thus useful for field trips. The illustrations in the new edition are simply lovely and improve tremendously over those in the earlier editions. A must buy.

Beautiful hand drawn illustrations, detailed characteristics, habitat, calls and everything else you need to know to identify a bird. A real work of art.
