Product Description

These discs showcase one of the worlds greatest ever traditional singers, Harry Cox is considered the most important and finest among the great English traditional singers of the 20th Century. What set him apart was his remarkable vocal style and vastrepertory of songs. The recordings on this double CD were specially selected from rare sources to show the depth of repertoire and the matchless quality of performances that were Harry Cox's special gift. Mostly made in the '50s and '60s there are over 2 hours of superb recordings previously unissued and mastered to the highest standard available. This high quality release contains an extensive 60 page booklet with rare photos, a detailed biography and notes and lyrics to all songs included. This is a landmark release - Harry Cox's influence is apparent on just about every English revival singer of the last several decades. "The Bonny Labouring Boy" is destined to be the seminal recording from the English Tradition.

I'll admit that I'm already biased in favour of this album in that I was born in Norwich and have been in love with Norfolk all my life. That said, I only developed an interest in folk music relatively late in my life and an obsession with the traditions of my home county even later. I stumbled on Harry Cox's singing by accident whilst watching a BBC documentary which featured footage of Harry singing 'The Bold Drover' and was instantly hooked. He may not have possessed the sweetest of voices, but what you get with this CD is a wonderful repertoire sung simply and without accompaniment or flourish. It also includes my favourite traditional song 'Barton Broad Ditty' as well as a detailed booklet containing and account of Harry's life as well as notes on all the songs and tunes. The sound quality does vary at times, but it must be remembered that these are basically 'field' recordings, though this certainly doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the album.

A lot of the songs were recorded at Harry's home and so the listener is treated not only to Harry's voice, but also to the ambient noises in the room - a log cracking on the fire, the sound of a clock and even one of Harry's granddaughters playing nearby. There are snippets of Harry talking about folksong and also conversing with those around him (the afore-mentioned 'Barton Broad Ditty' recording includes Harry explaining to those present the story behind the song). I think this adds to the atmosphere of the CD in an 'almost being there' kind of way.

There are precious few CDs of traditional Norfolk folk music available and this is one that I will certainly treasure.

As good as I remember when listening to him on the radio many years ago.

a brilliant link to the past 7 July 2013

For those who appreciate traditional British Isles unaccompanied singing, this is a gem. Definitely an acquired taste for those of us who grew up on modern pop music. It's an amazing opportunity to hear these ancient songs sung by the genuine article (born 1885) who must have learned them before the era of recorded music. I'm a sucker for these songs of the usual topics: women dressing up as men, the comic difficulties of married life, the finding of true love, seduction and betrayal, harsh punishments for minor crimes, etc. The occasional melodeon and fiddle playing make a nice addition to the collection.

Museum Piece Only 19 Sept. 2010

I wanted desperately to like this one, but an old man singing unaccompanied--and not very well--is not easy to take. Nobody likes the old croakers more than I do, but this one was mainly amusing himself. Many of these songs have been sung by others and their versions are almost always vastly superior to those found here. What this set is valuable for is learning some old songs. Unfortunately, that is not enough to keep it in my collection.
