Book Description

22 May 2014 Tom Thorne Novels (Book 12)

The Deal

Tom Thorne is back in charge - but there's a terrifying price to pay. Stuart Nicklin, the most dangerous psychopath he has ever put behind bars, promises to reveal the whereabouts of a body he buried twenty-five years before. But only if Thorne agrees to escort him.

The Danger

Unable to refuse, Thorne gathers a team and travels to a remote Welsh island, at the mercy of the weather and cut off from the mainland. Thorne is determined to get the job done and return home before Nicklin can outwit them.

The Deaths

But Nicklin knows this island well and has had time to plan ahead. Soon, new bodies are added to the old, and Thorne finds himself facing the toughest decision he has ever had to make...

Tom Thorne returns in this utterly gripping, brilliantly plotted thriller. The Bones Beneath is Mark Billingham's most ambitious and accomplished work to date.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the best 9 Jun 2014
By Biglad
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sorry to say it but this is the most disappointing Thorne book I have read. I'm happy to suspend belief and allow some poetic license but this stretched things too far - the whole premise on which the book is based - on an island with a prisoner dictating terms (and bringing his 'mate' along) just isn't credible and I found it difficult to get beyond this. Roll on the next one I'm sure it will be back to the usual standard......
PS I feel very disloyal writing such a negative review......

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing :( 6 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a dedicated fan of Mark Billingham (and Tom Thorne!) I was so excited to get this newest release, but for the first time in all of Billinghams books I was left feeling disappointed. Three quarters of the way through the book and I was still waiting for it to warm up....for the twist to kick in, my jaw to drop in surprise and to spend the rest of the day thinking "well I never saw that coming!". Sadly that never happened, and Thorne didn't progress in his usual brash style. Not what I've come to expect from the Thorne series, but no one can be brilliant all the time so I wait with anticipation for the next book.....

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 12 Jun 2014

I love Mark Billingham books or have done up until now. This plodded along with a sad inevitability. It was boring leading to a not very exciting twist and the escape was woefully predictable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful - worst Thorne book ever 24 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Guys, this is the worst Thorne book ever. I am seriously considering not buying anymore of Billingham's books. Without spoiling the plot it does not get the least bit interesting until you are 85% of the way through the book and then the ending feels rushed. The villian is also not bad enough. Avoid this book and spend your time reading something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific return for Thorne fans 17 Aug 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I love all the Tom Thorne novels and this doesn't disappoint. The dialogue between the main characters is typically witty and sharp and moves the story along nicely. If you have read all the previous novels involving Stuart Nicklin then you will get the most out of this story but it is still a fantastic stand alone story.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Bones Beneath 4 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Fantastic writing as always from Mark Billingham, however I felt the whole plot was a tad contrived.......get Thorne back on the streets of London, doing what he does best. Long time fans won't be too disappointed but it's far from the best in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very tense stuff ! 3 Jun 2014

This is one of those books in which you know something very nasty is going to happen so you read too fast, almost to get it over with ! Tom Thorne is on good form here; it really didn't suit him to be a Woodentop, so it is good that he's gone back to being a detective. I really enjoyed the story, the setting ( beautiful Bardsey), the suspense, and Tom himself who seems to be developing as a character in a very satisfactory way.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite crime series 27 May 2014
By Luanne Ollivier TOP 1000 REVIEWER
I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next book in Mark Billingham's Tom Thorne series - especially after the way the eleventh book, The Dying Hours, ended.

The Bones Beneath picks up six weeks after The Dying Hours. (New readers, you certainly could certainly read this book without having read others, but I highly encourage you to start with the first book, Sleepyhead. Trust me - you'll be hooked.)

I adore prologues that immediately hook the reader. In the opening pages of The Bones Beneath, an unnamed man is kidnapped from his home.....

And then immediately the story cuts to Thorne. I wondered many times what this unnamed man had to do with the plot. There are a few short chapters that cut to his timeline, but I was still scratching my head until the final few pages. And then it was an AHA! moment. A lovely plot twist.

Back to Thorne. Fans will recognize this name - Stuart Nicklin. Psychopath Nicklin and Thorne have crossed paths before, with Tom finally putting Nicklin behind bars for good. But then Nicklin says he'll reveal where he buried the body of one of his victims - but only if Thorne is the one to escort him. Thorne reluctantly agrees, but wonders why and what Nicklin has up his sleeve. Thorne is wary - and rightly so. "He couldn't think of a single reason that didn't scare the hell out of him."

Nicklin says the body is on remote Bardsey Island, off the Welsh coast. Billingham paints a very vivid picture of the island and its history. I, of course, had to check it out online - it's quite fascinating. This isolation and lack of connection with the mainland only heightens the sense of danger, of being with a madman who seems to be directing the way things will play out, even though Thorne is in charge.
