Product Description

When street cop Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) discovers a hideously mutilated corpse, her superiors call on forensics expert Lincoln Rhymes (Denzel Washington) to investigate. Paralysed after an injury sustained in the line of duty, the case gives Rhymes a new lease of life, but he needs a reluctant Donaghy to do the legwork for him if he is to stop the murderer from striking again.

From Amazon.co.uk

Released in late 1999, The Bone Collector was originally promoted as a thriller in the tradition of The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, suggesting that it would earn a place among those earlier, better films. Nice try, but no cigar. The Bone Collector settles instead for mere competence and the modest rewards of a well-handled formula. With a terrific cast at his service, director Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Patriot Games) turns the pulpy indulgence of Jeffery Deaver's novel into a slick potboiler that is grisly fun only if you don't pick it apart.

Noyce expertly builds palpable tension around a series of gruesome murders that lead us into the darkest nooks of New York City.

Now a bedridden quadriplegic prone to life-threatening seizures and suicidal depression, forensics detective Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) gets a new lease on life with a sharp young beat cop (Angelina Jolie) who's a wizard at analysing crime scenes. She does field work while he deciphers clues from his high-tech Manhattan loft, and as they narrow the search their lives are increasingly endangered. As this formulaic plot grows mouldy, Noyce resorts to narrative shortcuts, using perfunctory scenes to manipulate the viewer and taking morbid pleasure in his revelation of the murder scenes. And yet it all works, to a point, and the cast (including Queen Latifah and Luiz Guzmán) is much better than the material. If you're looking for a few good thrills, The Bone Collector is a pretty safe bet. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Judging from the dark cover of the dvd this is similar in it's bleak subject matter to Fallen [DVD] [1998],made a year earlier.
And it's just as good without the supernatural aspect.
Again Washington demonstrates that he has PRESENCE,playing a paraplegic detective confined to a bed and only able to use his mind, eyes and one finger(to manipulate software) to track a serial killer.
The film is helped by a superb supporting cast, including a surprisingly good performance by Jolie who almost steals the acting honours(for a change).
The plot doesn't insult the viewers intelligence and as the story unfolds we are treated to an exciting manhunt and climax, with a twist that few of us could have seen coming.
Entertaining and worth a watch or two.

The Bone Collector is fast-paced and jerky, with very few plot holes. Angelina Jolie once again displays her beautiful acting talents as the fiesty Amelia. She carries off Amelia's brave but scared attitude as a forensic rookie well, and her use of inflection, movements and faciel expression to display her fear and determination is incredibly realsitic. Denzil Washington is his usual masterful self, once again proving that he is among the elite of black actors, and actors in general. The other characters are well-cast and well-played. The special effects (i.e. the corpses) are realistic and grusomely effective, and the music lends so much atmosphere to the film.

I watched this movie when it first came out around 13 years ago but hadn't seen it since. It had long since vanished from my collection so I decided to buy it again.
Positives - Denzel Washington - who improves just about anything he's in in my view.
Also Angelina Jolie. This was shot before she was a "celebrity".These days it is perhaps sometimes overlooked she is also a very watchable and charismatic screen actor - as she shows here.
The relationship between the two leads works for me. Support cast is good too. The story kept me hooked right up to the end. Which is the weakest thing about the movie I think.
Your opinions on some movies change over the years but basically my opinion on the Bone Collector is the same as the first time I saw it. A well acted, well directed, entertaining 4 star thriller apart from the final reel which I still thinks needs some work! But much here to enjoy.

Lincoln Rhimes (Washington) is a paralysed forensics expert who has to make do with just being able to move his head and one finger. His loving nurse, Velma (Latifah) is always in deathly fear of him having a seizure that would leave him a vegetable. Lincoln is just trying to get on with his life, but, when a serial killer leaves a clue to his next victim, Rhimes is quick to jump at the case.
The killer always seems to be one step ahead of the Rhimes and his partner Amelia (Jolie) and gets to his next victim before they find the previous one. The tension and pressure are kept high until the final 40 minutes where the film starts to drag and discentegrate into a meaningless world of confusing ideas. Overall, phillip Noyce has come up with a very good film that is entertaining for a saturday night, not a film for the faint hearted.

Denzel and Angelina flex their respective acting muscles in this highly engageing thriller. As a rookie cop with an untapped flair for crime scene forensics, Angelina is reluctantly drafted onto Denzel's mini task force to track down a nasty and vindictive killer who taunts the police with clues at each scene. Denzel does remarkably well as the brilliant CSI permanently bedridden due to a devastating injury; he manages to convey a huge range of gravitas and emotion despite the physical constraints of the role. Angelina is wonderful as the intelligent and fragile rookie who must face each crime scene alone. I found the murders to be gory but not violent and the story engaging and well paced. The supporting cast including Michael Rooker and Ed O'Neill were great and Queen Latifah was a very pleasant surprise.

This is an intriguing film. Criminalist Lincoln Rhyme (Denzil Washington) is crippled by a roof-fall while investigating a case. Four years later, as a quadriplegic confined to his bed, he is called in to investigate another crime. The title of the film is the title of a macabre book that the killer is using as `inspiration' for his crimes. Rhyme is assisted by Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) who discovered the remains in this new case. Although only a constable, she shows such ability as a criminalist she is kept on the case. Captain Howard Cheney (Michael Rooker) is less than pleased to have Rhyme in charge of the case. The twists and turns of the story as new victims are discovered and new evidence emerges, piece by piece, make for fascinating viewing.

The Bone Collector was utterly riveting. I took a punt on this movie quite frankly just because of the name - i love a horror/thriller and this seemed right up my street. It features amazing performances from Washington and Latifah the result is a edge of the seat thriller based on the book of the same name. The shock ending is indeed a surprising one as the killer is revealed.
