Amazon Review

Andrea was the best bomb maker the IRA ever had, until a bomb that was not even meant to kill anybody killed four boys and maimed another; for ten years she has been a wife and mother and has thought that the world of terrorism and loud explosions had forgotten her. Stephen Leather's The Bombmaker is a complicated intrigue plucked from today's headlines, where no loyalty is forever and terrorism is a business. Andrea's daughter is kidnapped and held hostage and Andrea finds herself compelled to build the biggest bomb of her career ... And, as she tries to find a way out of her situation that will leave both her and her daughter alive, old allies and old enemies form alliances to cope with new situations. Leather is informative and ingenious; his plotting is fierce and his capacity to build almost unbearable suspense remarkable. The technicalities of building a large bomb from everyday materials or bugging a household or dealing with a group of SAS men with orders to shoot to kill are all efficiently and clearly laid out for us in this gripping thriller. --Roz Kaveney

This was the first Stephen Leather book I’d read, and if I’m honest I don’t really remember why I read it. The story centres on an ex-IRA bombmaker, Andrea Hayes, who has since settled down in England. Suddenly though, her daughter is kidnapped and the only way to get her back safely is to accept an assignment from a new terrorist unit to cause damage dwarfing anything she’s ever done before.
Set in Central London and Belfast the book is a fast flowing narrative across just nine days which makes the book very difficult to be put down. The characters are very well defined and the interaction between the kidnappers and Hayes’s daughther is particularly well written.
I found the end a little sudden but all in all a very good read, as a result of which I have read other Stephen Leather books.
As a by-the-way, this book has since been made into a TV film which was also rather good.

I ordered this book recently after watching the TV program on Sky One - mainly because we had picture interferance halfway through and I wanted to know what I'd missed. And I wasn't dissapointed. I have since read it several more times and each time I find myself unable to put it down.

I am becoming addicted to Stephen Leather! He is a prolific writer and having read most of the Spider Shepherd books I have begun to explore other titles. You are not overburdened with characters, plots develop very quickly and you are rapidly sucked in to the story line. Thoroughly recommended in terms of reading enjoyment. "The Bombmaker" is true to Stephen's usual form. The book is unputdownable once started. What bigger compliment could you pay to a story writer!

I've recently stumbled accross Stephen Leather by accident and I love his books! I'm tired of the predicatble thrillers by writers like Patterson & Hyder, so it's nice to see something with a bit of spark about it! This was fresh, original, well researched and entertaining! I think that thrillers should be fast, and this one doesn't disappoint! The plot zips along, gathering momentum and tension as it goes. The carachters, if a little thin, are realistic and perfectly suited to the pace and storyline of the book. I've recomended this to a few of my mates who are new readers and they've loved this as well. Great stuff!

It has been a while since I have read a Stephen Leather book and I now wonder what took me so long to return to this author. The Bombmaker is classic Leather with his mix of fast paced action and engaging characters. Traditionally twist and turns are evident and the book is a real page turner. Another excellent read, I wouldn't leave it so long between Stephen Leather books next time.

I really liked this novel. I may be biased as I do like Stephen Leathers books, especially his Spider Shephard series, but I would highly recommend this book.
I think think serious readers would relate to the "just one more chapter then bed" statement, I certainly had a few late nights because I couldn't put this book down!

This is not a book I would of picked off the shelf - with a name like the Bombmaker! Anyway, after reading Stephen Leather's 'Short Fuses' on my Kindle there was a sampler at the end. I was stuck for something to read, so I gave it a go, and was hooked. However, the end is a bit weak after such a good read throughout!

Having worked with ATO in NI i have had a great deal of knowledge of how to dispose of ANFO bombs and its right on that the composition/timers and detonaters are a written signature. I was impressed by the cooking process and the packing process. All in all a very good read.
