I will confess to not knowing very much about the two Boer Wars, my Grandfather fought in them, but, I knew nothing, so I had to find out. Many books are written about the wars, but, I found this one fits the bill well. It isn't some dusty tome, but, a brightly written book that explains the lead up to battle, the political scenario, the causes, and the debacles that followed.
The very nature of the Boer war at the turn of the century, is somewhere between modern warfare and the serried ranks of redcoated targets, and this becomes quite apparent, as the rather undignified performances of the 'ruling elite' caused so many deaths and mayhem.
Lots of well researched detail, a few maps and pictures are included too. It gives a good grounding for further discussion.
