Product Description

The Story Of Britain's Last Great Imperial War. When Britain went to war against the Boers in October 1899, the British public expected the fighting to be over by Christmas. As it turned out, The Boer War, in Kipling's famous phrase, gave the British "no end of a lesson". Using accounts of the soldiers who fought in this bitter and bloody clash-of-arms and remarkable contemporary photographs, the programme tells the story of Britain's last great Imperial war.

a lot of info is missing 26 April 2010
the dvd does not actually tell you what caused the war but does show what the south africans had to endure. It does not say anything about the imperial crossing over into zulu land and the conquest of the zulu nation. It does not say anything about why the boers had to get out of imperial controlled land ie the great trek over the mountains and into the wilderness. It dosnt say that piet retief and the five clans approached the zulu king and handed all there weapons in to the king asking him for permission to stay in zulu territory as farmers and that the 5 clans were massacred by the zulu. hence the battle of blood river followed to protect their nation from both imperial britain and the sudden massacre by the zulu with whom they were not at war with. It dosnt say that gold was discovered again by the boers it simply says that the imperial forces armed the zulu who massacred the boers as payback. You just paid someone back... yes why?The accurate reporting of history in any country is important because people will not get the true picture of true events and how these events will now change a country. All i see is a nation of farmers getting massacred by the entire commonwealth. What was nice to see at the end was the friendship that smuts had developed with churchill(what a lovely photo of 2 great men once enemies and now smiling as friends) and that he could call on his friend smuts for help in both world wars.It also should be noted that this review and commentry should not be taken as being nasty to any people as it is regrettable that these things ever happened but should be informative and like i said what a nice picture of mr churchill and smuts together as friends. i do believe that mr churchill did have a lot of respect for smuts and the boers especially with regards to their commando tactics so much that he put smuts on his war cabinet(i do have the photo)This is not covered in the dvd but with this commentry, i think that what is important is to note that regrettable terrible events did happen but they should be put behind. I hope that this review and commentry may help and inform.

Rather Brief 10 Feb 2008
This infotainment product is a little brief. It goes straight to start of the boer war with no explanation of background. The overview is very good and the way it's told is professionel, though it has some anglofile taint.
