The Best of British? 22 Sep 2011
By Alan James TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a big fan of low-budget vintage horror/sci-fi movies, I've learned through experience that Tony Tenser's Tigon Films have a bit of a hit-and-miss reputation, and this unengaging sci-fi story is one of the weakest. This shoestring budget offering tells the story about a number of parachutists that disappear while still in the air (along with the script presumably). The army decide to call in air investigator Bob Megan (Patrick Allen) in an attempt to get to the bottom of the mystery, could aliens be involved?

Sounds like we may have a cheap and cheerful treat on our hands maybe?... well actually NO I'm afraid, although the first few minutes are quite promising, with the fairly impressive aerial shots, and the restrictive budget didn't prevent the gathering together of a good cast which includes George Sanders and Maurice Evans, who when faced with the threadbare and uninteresting script, basically just go through the motions, with characters that are at best one-dimensional and wooden.
With it's bland dialogue, and yawn-inducing romantic interludes involving Patrick Allen and a mysterious young woman, (played by Lorna Wilde) who appears and then disappears into thin air, any flickering hopes that the story might rise above the mundane are quickly extinguished. The whole charmless farrago limps from one dull scene to another, while taking what seems like an eternity to reach it's rather corny conclusion.

In spite of it's colourful picture and cool 60's soundtrack, what may have been seen as cheerful sci-fi entertainment at the local cinema back in 1969 now sadly appears mind-numbingly dull and tedious. A 60's curio, nothing more. For a prime example of Tigon Films at their best, I would recommend the previous year's "Witchfinder General" starring Vincent Price and Ian Ogilvy.
Both the picture and sound quality on this 91-minute Odeon Entertainment release are generally good, there are no subtitles. The extras are a stills gallery and a selection of Best of British trailers. Also included is a two-page leaflet with details of the movie and selected cast members.
