Product Description

Synopsis

This book is dedicated to the potential hazards of trees. It shows the reader how a tree breaks, why it breaks, why perhaps it breaks too soon, and how it gives out a warning. In most cases the tree gives out a silent sign in its body language. It draws attention to many types of potential fracture points by producing symptoms. This book introduces the reader to this body language, and teaches the reader how to interpret and evaluate these symptoms biomechanically. This book provides new and needed information with diagrams. Readers should be able to understand the trees around them better, to recognise their warnings and to assess their safety more reliably.

Format:Paperback
From the much celebrated Claus Mattheck and Helge Breloer, (Lonsdale and Strouts), comes an arboriculture book about the signs of distress trees show us through their reaction growth.
The signs (body language)that trees give us have been documented numerous times by C. Mattheck but in this book it goes into detail on why trees grow the way they grow. It also has goes into the physical science of how the shape, size and hollows can compromise the stability of the tree as a structure.
t/R ratio, h/D ratio and others are in here.
At present the (much accepted) theory of these ratios is being pulled into question by another arboriculturalist Franz Gruber. Nevertheless this books information is crucial for the Arboricultural Associations Technicians Certificate, and the Professional Diploma.
Criticism of the book that lowers from a 5 to a 4 star is that the book on certain topics is hard to navigate around. You will find you require more of his books to use when reading and trying to understand cetain physics of the book. Also some of the information on decay detection equipment is a little dated.
That said it is interesting book covering the angles most commonly left by other authors, and not many people know more than the guys who put this book together. Feeds you the knowledge that is required to be inside the paperwork industry of arboriculture.

Good Day to All,
I am a level 4 Arborist based in Sydney Australia, The Body Language Of Trees was given to me as a christmas present from my wife, as she knows I have a passion for Arboriculture.
I have read this book and have found it to be a very imformative, easily understood book on VTA methods and theories, I would recommend this book to anyone involved in the managing of our suburban forest.

Only for specialists 16 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
The back cover of this book says it is a "fascinating insight into the mechanics of trees for anyone interested in trees..." Now I am as interested in trees as the next man but not having a PhD in physics or botany I have to say that I find this book unreadable. It may be the most brilliant analysis possible but I cannot judge it. Each page is more baffling to me than the last one. So sadly I shall not learn to comprehend the body language of trees as I had hoped, and am condemned to stand in dumb incomprehension as they speak to me. The bit of the back cover I should have read first was "an established reference for those with a responsibility for tree management." I shall stick with Strouts' and Winter's "Diagnosis of ill-health in trees", which though highly specialized too, is more approachable.
