This really is the best book on the Nazi invasion conspiracies that I have read so far. James Hayward covers the subject without getting carried away by the hype and the romance of these almost mythical tales of cloak and dagger raids along the eastern coasts between 1940 and the end of the war. The hearsay about the exercise that went wrong and the burnt bodies of our servicemen and our enemy that were - allegedly - continually being washed up along the coastlines in numbers ranging from 30 to 30,000 is a fascinating tale that, aided by eager whispers and 3rd-hand stories, eventually became the stuff of legend.

...sometimes the real reasons can still not be adequately explained. Why was the documentation of the 1940 evacuation of the civilian population of the tiny Suffolk fishing hamlet of Shingle Street classified for 75 instead of the normal 50 years? When in 1992 after the fresh furore of the media, tabloid and authoritative, helped cause the early declassification of the dossier in only to reveal, well, nothing of exceptional interest really. Another cover up? Another conspiracy? According to the authoritative and exceptionally well researched contents of this book one can conclude that these events occurred in the minds of the people who, at the time and subsequently, have been seeking an explanation to satisfy their hearts and minds - often disregarding the facts and accepting half truths and rumors to transport them more satisfactorily to their own personal desired result.

I highly recommend this excellent documentation of Operation Sealion, the Petroleum Warfare Department, the burning sea myth and Shingle Street legend to both people interested in clear and detailed historical documentation but also to those people that are simply after a damn good read! Some of the events described are nothing short of fantastic but are quite firmly documentation of actual events. Many of these things could not have been made more gripping by a Hollywood screen writer and that is what makes them all the more captivating as they are a part of our collective histories.

I can testify to author's perceptive research and good historical judgment. His narrative and argument are clear, convincing and readable, and his conclusions are sound.
Shingle Street and burned Wehrmacht bodies on the English coast in 1940 are a myth--formed in the period between mid-September and mid-December 1940, to be precise.
There are no dark secrets in "Ministry of Defence" basement, as one reviewer says. Why should there be? For 30-40 years we've known about Dresden, "Slapton Sands", Ultra, anthrax bombs, radar technicalities, and all sorts of matters the Allies kept secret during the war and afterwards. Why any need to keep a failed German amphibious raid, foiled by flame weapons or whatever, secret?

If you want to read about a fascinating myth, how it spread (equally interesting) and how it fell to bits get this book. Good value and a good read!

Bodies on the Beach 26 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I had heard of the supposed 'Battle of Shingle Street/Bawdsey' and this book gives answers, what was peddled as a failed German commando attack on Bawdsey Radar Station turns out to be a friendly fire incident which was covered up by the authories. This book however, is so much more and details many other incidents. Well researched and highly recommended.
