Biography

Spain is an indie rock band founded in 1993 by bassist/vocalist Josh Haden (son of jazz bass legend Charlie Haden).

Spain's debut 1995 CD, "The Blue Moods Of Spain", was released to much fanfare and enabled the band to tour the U.S., Europe, and Australia. The album was included on many music magazine "best of" lists for the year, and Spain performed on French ... Read more in Amazon's Spain Store

Why is this listed under Various Artists? It’s actually an album called The Blue Moods of Spain by a band called Spain you numpties. Sort it out Amazon.
Having got that out of the way may I say this is one of those deliciously pleasurable listening experiences that seemed to have been completely ignored by everyone else in existence except for myself and the other reviewer on these pages. Do we sound smug?….Good…. so we should. This is one of those albums that have a flow and mellifluous narrative that makes it virtually impossible to turn off once you’ve started listening to it. Awash with whispering percussion , gently strummed chords and undulating temperate strings and keyboards the music invokes a late night smoky ambience that calls to mind illicit liaisons in moody nightclubs , slyly exchanged glances at late night bus stops and just about anything to do with late nights really . Singer Josh Hadens voice is a velvet smooth baritone which effortlessly duplicates the rhythm of each song. There are no hard edges or angular corners with Spains music.. That’s a recommendation by the way just in case you hadn’t got the gist.
Every song on here is superb but “Untitled “takes their gossamer gloom to excruciatingly glorious heights. “Spiritual “has been covered by some one better known whose name escapes me for the moment. Sloppy I know but what I can tell you with utter clarity is its metronome arrangement is completely hypnotic. “Ray Of Light” completely immerses you in its restrained melodic magnificence while “It’s So True” is one of those songs that sounds fabulous at what ever speed it’s played. (How do I know?

This is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever had the pleasure of listening to, only surpassed by Spain's second CD 'She Haunts My Dreams'. The track Untitled #1 is probably my favourite song of all time - after hearing it on a late night radio 1 show many years ago, I just had to get hold of the album. The music is slow, mournful, acoustic guitar driven melodic balladry with a subtle tinge of jazz/soul. The deep, soothing vocals of Josh Haden take the listener to another world. If you want a truly moving experience, purchase this album.

I had this album up on my shelf, for god knows how long....a little treasure just begging to be found. Very mellow, moody, smooth and twistedly romantic....conjours up memories of a young, almost jaded, broken hearted male smoking cigerettes in the living room singing ballads on acoustic guitar, and this male does it gorgeously. There are some jazz moments melted together with slow blues/waltzy rock. Josh Hadens voice is an easy listen and coming from me that is a huge compliment....seeing that i can barely stand anything these days. Elliot Smith, Nick Drake, Nico and Idaho fans will appreciate this album.

Do you need a musical expression for your blues? Blue Moods by Spain -- This is it! Does the cruelty and hoplessness of the world make you melancholic? This might not help, but it's excellent for wet weather, tears or self-pity. The music is soft, velvety and dark. It's kind of a Nick Cave meets Chet Baker. There's a lot of slow piano and the misty vocals. It's definetly blue and very slow.

8/10.

smooth & sultry 22 April 2001
By John H - Published on Amazon.com

I remain astonished at the intensity of this album and I must have played it hundreds of times. From the opening bars of 'It's so True' thro to the final chorus of 'Spiritual' (no one ever prayed like THIS before), the musicianship and underplayed lyrics convey a raw tortured beauty which I last experienced listening to Jeff Buckley's live shows. It rubs shoulders with Miles' 'Kind of Blue', Jeff's 'Grace', Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon' and Will Oldham's 'I see a Darkness'. Music to sit down and actually LISTEN to. Wonderful stuff !

Heart Breaker of a music for a late 20th century. 10 Feb. 1999

Whatever your taste of music is, this album is a treat. For those who are consciously malancholic or those who indulge themselves in the emotional side of themselves once in a whille. This is terrific stuff!!

Still crazy about it after 5 years 28 Feb. 2000

The Blue Moods of Spain is one of the best albums I own, certainly when you narrow my collection down to the 90s. The title says it all really, and it differs from She haunts my dreams because this album is slower and even more melancholic than the second one. Spain is one of those bands who can't be expected to be successful with singles. You have to listen to the whole cd or not at all. Josh Haden is terrific on bass and vocals and all melodies are unforgettably beautiful. My personal favorites are I lied, Untitled #1, Ray of light, Spiritual and Ten nights. This album is not of this world.

My verdict 14 Mar. 2002

Slow, smooth, sultry - these are apt adjectives to describe the music in this CD. When I first came across it several years ago, I couldn't decide whether I was attracted by the special "mood" or repelled by the mannerism. With repeated listenings, I have to conclude that I love it. Call me bad taste if you want, but the music is really enjoyable!

great 24 May 2009

Imagine Nick Drake teamed up with Wes Mongommery. That might give you a vauge idea of what Spain sound like.

Don't take this concept to litterally. The guitar player in Spain does not emphasize solos, and the singer does not sound exactly like Nick Drake. Yet, this is jazzy, smokey music with understaded vocals. It is quiet and contemplative, yet informed by the blues. It is also atmospheric, without ever losing the importance of the songs.

Both the writting and playing are excellent, if understated. Give it a chance, because it is subtle, but has a lot of subtance, and will grow on you if you live with it for awhile.
