Amazon.co.uk Review

Sagittarius' second album, The Blue Marble, originally released in 1969 as a follow up to Present Tense was supposed to be a cornerstone in the development of the thoroughly modern Together Records, but sadly it was one of the few to even obtain a limited release. Back in the 1960s, Herb Alpert and Joe Meek weren't the only ones creating lovely orchestrated, lush, bachelor pad versions on the current music of the day. Oh no. Legendary Byrds producer Gary Usher also was responsible for some very sanguine, swinging, spookily psychedelic albums of his own including his studio based project as Sagittarius. Highlights from The Blue Marble include innovative use of "new" toys like the Moog, and a sumptuous take on the Beach Boy's heightened "In My Room" featuring vocal and arrangement from Curt Boettcher, plus some sweetened female vocals on songs like "Will You Ever See Me" to match even Dusty Springfield's torpor. This Poptones reissue comes with a bonus five tracks, including the imaginary road movie soundtrack "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City"--and an alternate take on "In My Room". It's well worth hearing twice. --Everett True

A melancholy gem 21 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Despite not quite being able to match the band's first album, Present Tense, this album is still a very fine follow up. It could have been even better had Curt Boettcher played a larger role in proceedings - Gary Usher does most of the singing and producing, although I believe Boettcher contributed considerably to the initial songwriting and vocal arranging (and left Usher to complete the project). The moog synthesizers are prominent and give the album a darker atmosphere than Present Tense, but it works well.

Argh! I knew it! 3 Sep 2001
By David Goodwin - Published on Amazon.com

I knew that right after I plunked down the $... for the Japanese reissue of this album, Poptones would reissue it themselves. Bah.

In any case...

Blue Marble is, and let's establish this right off the bat, *very* different from Present Tense; gone are the latter's more trippy leanings, and Blue Marble as a whole tends more towards what I saw one reviewer call a "spiritual earthiness." It also, in my opinion, isn't quite as strong as Present Tense, although Gary Usher (and this IS Gary Usher's project...Boetccher isn't nearly as involved as he was before) manages to still turn out an impressive piece of work. By the way, if this is anything like the Japanese issue of the CD (and since it shares a tracklisting, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the discs are exactly the same), it's taken from record, NOT from the master tapes...which disappointed me further. If you're looking for something like Present Tense, be wary, but Blue Marble (along with Gladys, and its other VERY well-thought-out tunes) is a worthy purchase in and of itself.

Nice followup! 21 April 2001

This second "Sagittarius" outing is quite different from its "Present Tense" predecessor; it's less orchestrated, earthier, and with a decidedly more mature bent. Long hard to get on LP--and unavailible on CD--this has finally been reissued (NOT from tape, unfortunately, but from LP...kinda inevitable, I guess) with a few nice bonus tracks. Like the first one, listen before you buy, but tracks like "Gladys" are well worth the purchase.

The Blue Marble 1 Feb 2009

Interesting but not the home run of 1st record. The big difference was the lack of harmony.
