My general impression of these stories is of light, translucence, space and thoughtful reflection. The locations are various, as far afield as Africa. There is a pervasive lucidity and lightness of touch that never overdoes and never underdoes, always perfectly in tune and arriving at the end of each story with a feeling of the perfect last notes of classical concerto for solo oboe or flute. Nothing jars, there is no browbeating or crawthumping, all is bright and refreshing, even when travelling in a realm of sorrow. The overall effect can be summed up in the word classical, because it conveys not only landscape painting and detailed characters but also a poise, mastery and perfection of finish without overworking of detail. I thought I should share my impressions to balance the previous review somewhat.

Pale blue. 5 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
Maggie Gee may have written some successful novels but this is an uninspiring collection of ho-hum stories about middle class life. Having struggled to read them all, none of them stayed with me afterwards as being memorable or impressive. English writers, and particularly English women writers, seem to churn out these pale, ordinary pieces and then wonder why publishers state that they can't sell books of short sories.

Robert Shearman and Sarah Salway have produced worthwhile collections but, if you want to read short stories that are worth the effort, you'll do better looking beyond the UK. Thank God other countries value the form more than we do.
