The best of Wambaugh's cop stories - Guardian

Abounds in vivid vignettes of police life and the Los Angeles streets...the portrait of Bumper has force and authenticity - New York Times Book Review

Wambaugh is the best in the business Kathy Reichs

From the Back Cover

“The best of Wambaugh's cop stories” Guardian “Bumper” Morgan is a Los Angeles cop, a patrolman with over twenty years' service under his belt and with only two days to go before he “pulls the pin” and retires. But the streets of Los Angeles aren't yet through with Bumper. He is about to face the only thing that scares him - the demons lurking behind his LAPD badge. With the publication of The New Centurions and The Blue Knight, Joseph Wambaugh wrote two classics of crime-writing and changed for ever the way in which the police would be written about in fiction.

This book is the best cop book written bar none. It captures the world of a ordinary beat cop like no other, not suprising as the author was a beat cop in LA for ten years. The 'lure of the beat' shines through the eyes of Bumper Morgan and you live his last three days on duty before 'retirement?' in a seedy, but somehow sympathetic world of the ordinary man versus the ordinary cop. A world of pill pushers, con men, muggers and thieves. A world of desparate men trying to survive in a world without tax credits, where if you fall you fall all the way. Bumper has lived it for years but can he give it up? Is he tired of it or is he really as hooked as the pushers he affects to despise? Read it, you will never forget it. Is there more than sand in that valley?

If you've ever walked the beat in a Police Uniform, you'll appreciate this book 100% because it was written by someone who did just that.

Even if you never Policed a town, you'll really go for this because it is packed with detail of what happens on the street, the people you encounter, the situations, the highs and the lows.

So this is a short review, the book says it all so read it!

Joeseph Wambaugh was a real LAPD Police Officer who has it all taped. A great read!

This was not Wambaugh at his best and could have been cut back quite a few pages but once again it shows the ineptitude of administration of the law in the US when officers doing the job are ham stringed.
