Transform basic sailing skills into true mastery

No other sport is as complex or as gear- and technique-intensive as sailing. The details and nuances are vast, but beneath the surface are 22 elements, or core areas of knowledge. By understanding these principles you can attain true mastery: tie any knot, shape any sail, take the helm of any boat, no matter how large or unfamiliar.

About the Author

Adam Cort is a former editor and regular contributor to Sailing magazine and the coauthor with Richard Stearns of the widely acclaimed Getting Started in Sailboat Racing. Adam is a lifelong sailor, has cruised extensively, and has sailed and raced dinghies, maxis, and most boats in between.

This is a well written and practical work offering sensible and (possibly more importantly) readable guidance for all types of sailing craft and scenarios.
Learning from others experiences and disasters has a vivid and memorable imprint- this learning may avoid some personal scar tissue and damaged topsides in the future.. an excellent book.

I was given this book recently and am just about to buy a copy for a friend (nuff said?). Having recently gained my Yachtmaster qualification, I've been hungry for good reading material and this is a book that will be a reference for some while - perhaps a very long time.
I like:
The layout of the principles makes it very digestible.
For non-scientists the explanations show how a multitude of factors affect how a boat moves, e.g. the mechanics of how sails generate power is fairly simply explained and understandable.
It should encourage the reader to delve further into each aspect of sailing.

I don't really like that much:
It's written for American readers, so there aren't many useful examples of sailing in British waters and the vocabulary will cause some minor confusion.

Most sailing books don't address such a wide brief, or if they do, they tend to be 500 pages of turgid gloop. Breaking sailing down into 22 keys aspects is a brave attempt, and a successful one in my view, at simplyfying a highly complex subject.

It's a straight book. The author knows his things. He is very good in explaining the theoretical issues in a simple, clear and often with 'tongue in cheek'.
I have just written a review of another book, that I read just before this one, "Understanding Boat Design" by Ted Brewer. That book I don't recommend, I gave it 2 stars,
perhaps that was to much, but OTH he knows what he writes about, but he can't transfer it.
Adam Cort can do that in an excellent way. It's nearly the first time I read about this subject, so relaxed and sometimes with a smile, the construction of yachts and how and why they behave like they do.
Important is that it's a new book, printed 2009, this subject tends to be cemented back in the old age in nearly every book I have read before. This has a lot of new angles.
This is a book I will re-read, and that's the best I can say about a book. It would have got 5 stars, if it had been abit more attractive in layout, OTH it's very good to still produce such a good book with so simple illustrations. It could also have a technical appendix, an ABC and more general literature references:
Buy it, you will have it in the boat.
I will :-)
