An excellent follow-up to Newman's "Anno Dracula", this book continues the alternative history where Dracula defeated Van Helsing, brought vampirism out into the open, and took control, for a time, of the British Empire!

In "The Bloody Red Baron" World War One has come to Europe and many characters from the first book return to take sides and do battle for their causes.

Plot-wise the book revolves around the mystery of an airborn menace that threatens to dominate the skies above war torn France but, as with "Anno Dracula", it's the detail that makes this book special.

As a pop-culture-sponge par-excellence Newman draws inspiration from the myths, legends and entertainment of the whole globe. For every character or reference you recognise there are probably a dozen you don't but they all add depth and texture to the story.

If this book feels a little flat in comparison to "Anno Dracula" it's simply because Newman used so much good material in the first book.

Fortunately 'The Bloody Red Baron" is as skillfully written and readable as its predecessor. Having since read "Dracula Cha Cha Cha" it's a pleasure to go back to this book (and "Anno Dracula") and enjoy the development of one of the most interesting and entertaining alternative history series in recent years.

Great stuff!

Newman continues to be the master of the what-if? blend of fact and fiction. Thirty years on from the events of Anno Dracula, Vlad Tepes, the bloody red baron of the title, is facing his former subjects as head of the kaiser's armies. Action centres around a group of elite allied vampire fliers facing a new and evil threat from Richthofen's vampire circus, assisted by a vampire Edgar Allen Poe. As usual, Beauregard of the Diogenes Club is in the thick of the action, with a little help from a shape shifting Mata Hari and Kate Reed, a subsidiary character from Anno Dracula, promoted to a major one here.

While the novelty of Anno Dracula's inspired mixing of fact and fiction has worn off, Newman's writing continues to provide inspired images. I particulary liked a new-born Churchill sucking on a rabbit laced with Madeira during a cabinet meeting. On a more serious note, Newman tries to answer some difficult metaphysical questions about vampirism: how do different bloodlines interact(Dracula is using eugenics to create the perfect flier) and how far can a human move towards the vampire state without crossing over. Combined with Kate Reed's musings on what it is like to "age" as a vampire, this is thought-provoking stuff.

My only complaint is that Newman's allusions come thick and fast. Few can be as well read in popular fiction, vampirism and the first world war as the author. While some of the fun is deciphering who is who (and which real and unreal) by oneself, a glossary would help the reader to test their knowledge.

This should not take away from what is a virtuoso read, genuinely chilling and well written. I await the third instalment with eager anticipation.

A terrific follow-up to Anno Dracula, the action moves forward to The Great War, where Dracula is directing the big push for the Kaiser. The literary games, references and in-jokes continue and only add to the enjoyment. Excellent.
