Book Description

31 Aug 2013
The uncanny abilities of London crime-scene specialist Kelly Jacks to coax evidence from the most unpromising of crime scenes once earned her the nickname of The Blood Whisperer. Then six years ago all that changed. Kelly woke next to the butchered body of a man, the knife in her hands and no memory of what happened. She trusted the evidence would prove her innocent. It didn't. Now released after serving her sentence for involuntary manslaughter, Kelly must try to piece her life back together. Shunned by former colleagues and friends, the only work she can get is for the crime-scene cleaning firm run by her former mentor. But old habits die hard. And when her instincts tell her things are not as they appear at the scene of a routine suicide, she can't help but ask questions that somebody does not want answered. Plunged into the nightmare of being branded a killer once again, Kelly is soon fleeing from the police, Russian thugs and a local gangster. Betrayed at every turn, she is fast running out of options. But Kelly acquired a whole new set of skills on the inside. Now street-smart and wary, can she use everything she's learned to evade capture and stay alive long enough to clear her name? "Zoë Sharp is a master at writing thoughtful action thrillers." -Meg Gardiner "Sharp is the best kept secret in crime fiction, it's about time that changed." -Stuart MacBride "Zoë Sharp is at the top of her game." -Harlan Coben

5.0 out of 5 stars Zoe delivers another 5* read 6 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This may be unsurprising to those of you who've read The Charlie Fox Series by Zoe Sharp, those that haven't,you really should, you're in for a real treat!
In this book Zoe introduces a whole new cast of characters and a new heroine who's just as hard and intriguing a character as the inimitable Charlie. Meet Kelly Jacks. A meteoric fallen star of the Crime Scene Investigative world,Tried,Convicted and Time Served for Manslaughter. Jacks now works crime scene clean-ups. But can she let her old life and its circumstances and injustices alone when her instincts scream at her that something's wrong with a scene she finds herself confronted with.? Lol of course she can't! What follows on the streets of London and its surrounding Counties is a rollercoaster ride of murder, intrigue, violence, gangsters, police manipulation and being hunted by the Russians.. Zoe leads you on a merry ride with twists and turns aplenty. If you like the crime, mystery genre then you could do no better than to give this a go. It's well worth the reasonable entrance fee and Zoe never fails to pack a punch and her characters are so easily brought to life in the minds eye. I guarantee you won't be disappointed in what Zoe calls her first stand alone novel. If this is the first then I hope it's the first of many.
I would 100% recommend this book. Excellent read. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars An intelligent thriller 8 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am a fan of Zoe Sharp's "Charlie Fox" character, so I decided to try this book. I was a little nervous that the main character seemed similar to "Charlie Fox" and it's not always certain that writers of long established series can branch out successfully into standalones.

The book kept me hooked from the first page. Wrongful imprisonment, Blood droplets, suicide or was it? Intelligent and interesting. Messy plot twists that gave a real life feel and refreshingly human characters. Ms Sharp is talented at writing with a light touch and letting readers fill in the details with assumptions whilst reading - and then challenges those assumptions.

Kelly Jacks is a vulnerable heroine who doesn't resort to whinging when life gets tough - but equally manages her situation believably. I gave up on the injury count early on but equally this seemed reasonable given the situations that the characters landed themselves in.

A splendid read - enjoy

Kelly Jacks is another great character, a good strong female lead you can root for. She's had ups an downs similar to Charlie Fox, but is a diferent character, in a completely new settling, with different skills. It kept me going right to the climax and worked really well. I look forward to, hopefully more in a new series?

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Charlie, you will love this 15 Dec 2013

I was a bit unsure as I tend to be dissapointed when someone like Zoe who has a long term series, and then pops up with a stand alone book. So I was cautious - what a waste of time that was!!

The book was thoroughly enjoyable, the twists and turns, the characters, the story, I loved it. I was so happy that my fears were so unfounded.

I have been reading rather sporadically recently, due to family illness I have not had much time, and I found I started several books and and only lasted a short time till I became disinterested. With this one I have been picking up my Kindle whenever I have the chance!

You have a touch of CSI, touch of police thriller, some Russians for good measure. I liked Kelly, the main character, and everytime I thought i had it figured out I was wrong.

If you have previously read Zoe, read this you will love it, If you are new to her, give it a go, it will be worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars First time I've read Zoe Sharp 25 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I didn't have the time to devote to this book it's my fault I didn't get into the flow, I did make emotional bonds with the characters so I will be reading more from Zoe. If you like a fast paced, action packed, meaty crime novel this is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Blood Whisperer 17 Nov 2013
Kelly Jacks is the eponymous protagonist in what promises to be a new series by Zoe Sharp. I wondered to myself, `blood whisperer'? Is that anything like a `horse whisperer?' Well, yes, it is, actually. Kelly is, as the author puts it, "someone who seemed to be able to coax evidence out of the most unpromising of scenes." Now 40 years old, the former CSI now works for McCarron Specialist Cleaning Services, the services in question being performed at crime scenes after they are released by the police. She's gone from being the first on the scene for nearly 10 years as a CSI, to being the last. The crime scene Kelly is working as the book opens is one where a woman's body has been found in her bathtub, an apparent suicide. But Kelly has her doubts. And those doubts open up a world of threats, hurt and violence as others try to stop her from pursuing them.

After the wonderful Charlie Fox series, including ten novels, a short story collection and a novella, the author has managed to create another strong female lead with an intriguing background: Kelly started her new job upon her release from five years of incarceration after having been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, still proclaiming her innocence.

Ms. Sharp has produced a complex plot which includes Russian gangsters and the top tiers of English horse-racing, with steadily increasing suspense and a sense of calamity to come as the book races to its conclusion, neither the protagonists nor the reader knowing how it will end, but bracing for the worst: they've already seen the brutality of which their foes are capable and suspect that something far wore is still to come. There is an unexpected twist near the end, and another one I certainly never saw coming after that!
