Book Description

12 May 2006
Paul Wood was just a tourist in battle-scarred Sarajevo. Then an unexpected encounter changed his life. Now he is a desperate woman's only hope of escape. To get her to safety, he must find a way through the minefield of warlords, criminals, and peacekeepers that is postwar Bosnia. Pursued by brutal gangsters, unable to leave the country legally, Paul agrees to do a job for a shadowy group of human traffickers, in exchange for safe passage. The traffickers seem friendly. The job seems harmless. But when he discovers the secrets seething beneath, the repercussions will propel him on a perilous journey around the world - from a warlord's compound in lawless Albania, through the jungles of Latin America, and towards an explosive confrontation at an extraordinary festival in the Nevada desert ...

Review

'In this haunting, suspense debut, Evans takes the reader on a page-turning adventure' -- Publishers Weekly on TRAIL OF THE DEAD 'As the plot unfolded, I found myself constantly surprised. Jon Evans's plotting is excellent ... and at the end all the strands were tied up perfectly. I never wanted to put the book down.' -- Emily Barr on TRAIL OF THE DEAD 'You're hooked. Evans contrives to slip the necessary specialist net-head detail into the plot without being boring or patronising. He can also pin down a character with a few details deftly brushed in ... The characters are delightfully delineated by their speech patterns ...beautifully controlled ... not the least satisfying aspect of this pacy thriller for the 21st century is the way things go on happening until the last page.' -- The Times on TRAIL OF THE DEAD --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Publisher

Jon Evans won the Canadian CWA first crime novel prize and this, his second novel, is as pacey and exciting as the first. Evans is a genius at writing up-to-the-minute thrillers that span all the Earth's and web's possibilities in an increasingly globalised and computerised world. Heis writing has a terrific sense of place which comes from travelling six months in every year. His plots may be original and twisty but also, terrifyingly credible. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Holiday Read 27 Mar 2006
Format:Paperback
I picked the paperback up in Tenerife Airport whilst waiting for a delayed flight home on a whim - and was extremely surprised that I'd read it 15 hours later half way home (13 hour delayed flight!). The story is fast-paced, written well but not brilliantly so and grips you from the off. Good character outlines, enough back story to make them interesting and a flawed - if rather too hip - main character. The villan(s) of the story are fleshed out enough to be believable without being too James Bond Blofeld-esque and over the top. With good locations, a bit of nerd speak and a cool setting for the showdown (Burning Man - inspired!) as well as a believable & straightforward plotline. This comes highly recommended from me & made me seek out other books by the same author - such a shame he's only done two books so far.

A must if you want escapist reading on a sunny beach then this is a must.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Gripping Thriller 5 Sep 2009
By AS
Format:Paperback
I chanced upon this book with no ideas or expectations - I was simply drawn by the back cover blurb which offered a thriller set in Eastern Europe. And it's quite clear that the author has a sound knowledge of Mostar, Sarajevo and various locations in Albania. These well-drawn settings plus the unusual cast of characters make this thriller stand apart from most others I have read. The characters are all fully realised and sympathetic - even the mastermind baddie has a dangerously attractive quality to him. Really well-written and gripping. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Blood Price 25 Mar 2006
By Rem
Format:Paperback
The Blood Price is a great book, its a real rollercoaster of suspence! Its written from the perspective of a Canadian guy in his late 20s - and sounds like it might be one of your mates telling you all about his adventurous travels. The synopsis of the book is all you need, except as said, the difference is that you can believe what Paul, the main character is telling you as he sounds like a real person - with real problems and a real sense of humour. I haven't quite finished it, but can't wait to start reading his first novel which i missed!...
