I haven't seen The Bling Ring, but the soundtrack is excellent. The movie is about a group of fame-obsessed women who try to steal their way to glory. The music collected for this soundtrack is energetic, loud, and at times crass. From the course that the movie's narrative takes, it begins with the loud distorted fun of Sleigh Bells ("Crown on the Ground") to finish with the perfect track from Frank Ocean ("Super Rich Kids").
For the most part, the 17 tracks here are a who's-who of urban pop. You've got your Sleigh Bells (as seen in the trailer), your Frank Ocean, your Kanye West, your deadmau5, your MIA, your Azalia Banks, and the list goes on. Can is even on this soundtrack -- that's right -- legends of krautrock make an appearance on this record. While a song by Can might not seem to fit next to Kanye West, it works perfectly in the context of the soundtrack. Some of the songs are more atmospheric (like the tracks from Klaus Schulz, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Brian Reitzell), and these tracks do well to reign in how energetic the rest of the album can get.
From what I can tell, most of these songs are not original to the soundtrack. If you don't have most of these tracks, you owe it to yourself to check out this soundtrack. However, because many of the best songs here ("Super Rich Kids," "Power", or "Crown on the Ground") come from pre-existing records, it wouldn't make a ton of sense to buy this if you already own those albums. At any rate, this is a super good soundtrack that's generally a lot of fun.
